Planet of the Bass is out, a new moon is coming tomorrow, and I quit my job in the most “in my integrity and in my bag” way I could’ve ever imagined. Life is fucking awesome.

All in all tho, really good film! Amazing cast, amazing production, very strange and very fun. 8/10 do recommend!

Which bummed me out because it clearly was meant to be this capstone to the piece, the tension had risen and it was about to break all while delivered by the amazing America Ferreira, but it was a nothing burger of a few paragraphs.

The part that pulled me out of the experience tho was Gloria’s monologue (which had received much media attention). It felt obvious and pandering in a way that the rest of the film didn’t. No humor, nothing incisive to say, just a “did you get it?” summary of the films basic idea

And again I felt something deeply painful and similar when Barbie was asking Ruth, “Can I be a human?” And Ruth responds, “You don’t need permission, you just discover it.” Big Trans Feelings™️ that whole scene.

Barbie in the real world suddenly realizing how beautiful and deeply sad everything is was the moment I started crying and I barely stopped. Going on Estrogen and beginning my transition felt like that. A sharpness came to the world; joy is greater but so is pain.

Emotionally, it hit really close to home for me but also had a few moments that spoiled the depth of it. Spoilers ahead 🛑

The slapstick comedy and practical effects were absolutely amazing! Barbie Land had a feel that films from before the onset of CGI have which makes my brain so happy. It often reminded me of Death Becomes Her in its visual specificity, strangeness, and wit.

In general? The film is a wild fever dream. Deeply uncanny and strange at so many turns. It really lit me up for its entertainment value alone! If it had nothing to say and had only been a charming comedy of errors, I would’ve walked away satisfied anyway.

you will never catch me saying someone I hate is bad at something they're good at. I just read a poem by a mfer I can't stand (not that one) & i had to be like "okay... work." a true hater does not hate falsely. that's the true hater first commandment
