I made an AI clock for my bookshelves! It tells the time with a new poem EVERY MINUTE composed by ChatGPT. And it has. weird vibes??. tl;dr it's on Kickstarter as of right now. I want to tell you the story because I didn't mean to do this.

I first started thinking about AI consciousness (and sentience) in 2023, and I stand by this conclusion:. The point of asking about AI consciousness is all the other questions you hit along the way. This is my best summary post on the topic.

Is a bee not-conscious in the same way that an AI is not-conscious?. Weirdly the very possibility of machine consciousness has made us more open to animal consciousness!.

Can we test for consciousness?. We can go further than the Turing test. it's not just a behavioural test, merely asking questions can indeed reveal something about internal structure. But I'm not sure that helps, this is subjectivity not science.

Then onto the definition of consciousness itself, and whether it matters!. If AI consciousness *is* possible or if it *isn't* possible: both have big consequences for ethics and for brain implants. We'll need a fuzzy patchwork pragmatic definition to copy.

If we discovered tomorrow that AI was conscious. would it make a blind bit of difference?. Nah, we're pretty sucky to chickens and even other humans, and I'm sure they're all conscious too.
