I grew up on a dairy farm. Mom would often announce to the family the name of the cow we were eating. Being a guest in our house for dinner was often awkward.

I don’t eat pork, and I don’t eat calamari (consciousness) but I’m a pragmatist. They would have been killed *anyway* - my eating or not eating would make no difference.
The only thing that makes a difference to me is consciousness. I won’t eat anything with an equivalent…

I guess they assume that we don't know that cows are living beings, just like all the animals we eat. We do, but life isn't a disney film.

Yes. Cows are food not friends or pets. They are animals and should be well cared for, and respected as a part of nature…by they are not pets.
