Oakland/Bay Area focus on streets, transit, housing, and land use (ARCHIVED)
Oakland, CA
Joined September 2009
Another year has passed… and another ~2,000 semi-trucks have used Wood Street, a Truck Prohibited Street in West Oakland. The past 3 years have been marked by delayed action and growing indifference from the City of Oakland and Port of Oakland. A thread 🧵

It’s conceivable that a person (or family) riding their bike to/from Emeryville may be struck and killed here. I’ve had a few close calls myself over the years. A high-speed turn on an unnecessarily wide street augments the danger. @OakDOT

For 5+ years, the City has failed to keep bicyclists and pedestrians safe at the north end of Mandela Parkway. Vehicles block the bike lane and sidewalks 24/7. Dozens of 311 tickets and emails sent, to no avail.

Remember the amazing multicolored light sculpture called Undercurrent, located under the bridge over Lake Merritt Channel? It has long since been destroyed, but it was awesome while it lasted. What’s the public accessibility of the channel pathway like these days?

An example of online housing discourse in West Oakland. What I appreciate is how succinctly they’ve managed to summarize their misconceptions about how housing affordability works.

“Point of Infinity” by Hiroshi Sugimoto is sublime. Feels like a monument befitting of Starfleet HQ in future San Francisco. It’s a straightforward bike ride to Yerba Buena Island from West Oakland and Emeryville. 🚲

Kaiser Rooftop Garden in Uptown Oakland is the best green roof in the Bay Area, hands down. 3.5 acres, open 9-5 weekdays.

Fare evasion gymnastics is ableism. It discriminates against a large number of people. Ever seen a person with a mobility impairment catapult over the fare gates? Neither have I.

Motorist ran a red light at Mandela Parkway & West Grand just now. Caused a crash with some poor folks. Everyone is OK 🙏 @OakDOT, Grand Ave traffic safety infrastructure couldn’t come soon enough to this god awful intersection.

Paseo de la Reforma, a large avenue thru downtown, is closed to motorists and open to bicyclists/skaters/walkers every Sunday… 4/

Lots of traffic safety bollards, outdoor dining parklets, and appropriately sized streets/sidewalks… 3/

I’m blown away by the urbanism and ped/bike infrastructure of Mexico City 🇲🇽 🧵… 1/

The incredibly odd juxtaposition of these back-to-back posts by Khosla demonstrates why we should not put all our eggs in the Silicon Valley basket. Also, what are said “modern public transit ideas” that rival trains?

Now that MLB has voted to approve A’s relocation to Las Vegas, can we please begin rollout of #SlowStreetsStomper, @OakDOT?
Given how much time and resources @OakDOT sunk into planning for Howard Terminal/JLS improvements, I encourage the City to seize all 50 Stomper statues and repurpose them as traffic safety bollards for Slow Streets. #SlowStreetsStomper

It’s that time of year again when only a 10-minute downpour turns the no-drainage flatlands into a river and makes the crosswalks impassable. Slow down for pedestrians and cyclists, who have it the worst.

BTW, @OakDOT 7th Street West Oakland Transit Village Streetscape Phase II project was never finished; it’s still missing landscape ground cover on the west side of the project, toward Wood St.
