Meet Australia's most recently named and described longhorn beetle: Excastra albopilosa! I was lucky enough to discover this remarkable species while camping @binnaburra in 2021. Have a read of the UQ News article for more detail and a link to the paper. #entomology #newspecies
Chance sighting by #UQ researcher leads to the discovery of new genus of longhorn beetle. It's believed the white fluffy exterior helps camouflage it from predators. @uqscience 📖 https://t.co/1SQNyqznF7

Protecting wild bird nests from predators using non-lethal methods improves nest success 🪺 However, the type of method employed and system-specific factors can influence its effectiveness🐦 @gautschi_daniel @antica_c @teamswiftparrot @ANUFennerSchool 🔗 https://t.co/0qlXyCBxgV

I’m currently living it up on holiday in Spain and I couldn’t help but notice the insane number of Monk Parakeets and Rose-ringed Parakeets. They’ve taken over the cities!! Very interesting seeing parrots in such different circumstances.

Our new report confirms Australia's modern extinction rate is worse than feared, 23 animals and 4 plants have been lost since the 1960s. That's a rate of 4.5 extinctions per decade for the past 60 years. A thread (1/4)👇 https://t.co/nfEZwvbegU

Extinctions are holes torn in the fabric of life, and Australia is ragged from having so many species ripped out.

Yesterday Victoria announced an end to native forest logging. How much longer will Tasmania continue to recklessly destroy swift parrot habitat? ⏳

A feral cat caught on camera trap with a fledgling Norfolk Island green parrot. Only ~250 remain in the wild, so every bird counts. Despite efforts to reduce feral cat numbers in the island's national park, they are still a big problem. 📸Daniel Gautschi & Luis Ortiz-Catedral.

Let’s be honest. Who doesn’t aspire to have a #wildlifegarden that looks like this?! 😍 I certainly do! 👏👏👇#NoMowSummer
Unbelievable amount of #wildflowers suddenly burst into life with this good weather @_JoelAshton Such a stunning early display in contrast with the formal borders. #GardeningForWildlife #WildflowerMeadow #Insects #Spring

"five days on King Island wading through waist-high grass and bracken and fending off enormous leeches, in a race against time." At first I thought it sounded a bit dramatic but it's actually entirely accurate!

Tanya Plibersek came into office promising no new extinctions. This small brown bird, native to a tiny island, could be the canary in her coalmine.

Finishing up my PhD fieldwork on Norfolk Island today. It's been a privilege to spend time in such a beautiful place. Now back home to start writing up the rest of my thesis! 🦜

Managed to capture a quintet of Norfolk Island's worst #weeds in one photo. Can you spot them?

Nest boxes offer important habitat. New study in #AustralEcology tests the internal climate of artificial nestboxes showing the importance of double-walled interiors when using plastic nestboxes. @Mick_Callan
