As writers are confessing to their typographical preferences, I’d like to add that I use a font called Antique Sorcery, 12pt, one and a half line spacing. After typing a few chapters the book writes the rest of itself, which is handy. Apart from the demon it summons at the end.
I was tidying up in my storage unit a few weeks ago and I found a carton of empty Abhorsen’s bell charm boxes. I was going to put them straight in the recycling but decided to check first. Top boxes all empty, but lower ones ... not! So giveaway soonish.
Overheard in my son’s D&D game.
Player 1: I’ve reformed. I’m not as stabby as I used to be.
Player 2: *I’m* very stabby.
Player 3: *I’m* very, very stabby.
Player 4, who I suspect is the most stabby of all, says nothing ...
Exciting news for Old Kingdom fans in North America: on August 3rd 2021 the original trilogy will be re-released by
@KTegenBooks
(an imprint of
@HarperCollins
) in paperback with the classic covers by Leo and Diane Dillon within antique foil borders. But there's more 1/
I needed a copy of the 1997 US paperback of SABRIEL, with the classic Leo and Diane Dillon cover, to give to someone. So I ordered a copy in, just had a look at the imprint page. 47th printing, 22 years later. It’s a funny old world, isn’t it?
I found out you can get an adapter for ancient Mac keyboards to USB. This is the keyboard I wrote SABRIEL on back in 1993-1994. I plugged it into my MacBook and it still works!
New novel done (for now), and delivered. Longest one I’ve written, 140,000 word YA/crossover epic fantasy. With musketeers. And angels. And icons. And beastlings. And ... a title and pub date TBA
My father, Professor Henry Nix AO, passed away early on Wednesday 2nd February. He died peacefully in his sleep, aged 84 (he would have been 85 next July).
Some pages from the SABRIEL ms. I only write on the recto (right-hand) pages and makes notes on the verso (left) often trialling name variations etc Interesting to see here I had the bell names straight out of my mind 😀
I tend not to post about film/TV news, because so often projects never get much past being optioned etc. But as lots of people ask me about the Old Kingdom in particular, here is the *current* state of that very long-running book to screen saga
Advance copies of the new UK edition of SABRIEL arrived today, and here is one in full splendour, with foil, flaps, printed inside covers and all! Thank you
@HotKeyBooksYA
On sale 23rd July, please preorder here
The good marketing folk
@AllenAndUnwin
toiling away in their subterranean forges* have made these lovely Charter Mark pins to celebrate the release of their 25th Anniversary edition of SABRIEL next week. I’ll give some away in due course, stay tuned.
*AKA lockdown home offices
Opening this book delivery was rather like opening a treasure chest. It always is, of course, but something about embossed gold foil makes it even more so 😀
An advance copy of the first of the 25th Anniversary editions of SABRIEL, this is the Australian one from

Australian and British covers to come 😀
I love seeing such well-read books of mine (and signing them too, which will be happening again when I get on the road again next year for the first time since 2019). Thank you for reading and championing books!
Shoutout to my absolutely destroyed
@garthnix
Old Kingdom paperback set. My copy of Sabriel literally disintegrated into its component pages because I read it so much
I just noticed that the collar and bell has slipped from Mogget’s neck. These two — a gift from a bookseller in Norwich — have been in the same place on my desk for years. What does this mean?
Sad news, I’m afraid. Our beloved dog Sam was diagnosed with cancer in February. He had treatment and continued happy and energetic up until the last few days but deteriorated over the weekend. He was helped to leave this world by our vet several hours ago. Here he is last Friday
To commemorate the 50 year anniversary of J.R.R Tolkien’s death, I had a second breakfast, and read THE HOBBIT in the bath with a cup of tea. Now I think I will read LOTR again for the umpteenth time.
Being a writer is rather like being a medieval merchant. You dispatch your manuscript, and it will be a year and more before you know the outcome. Will your argosy bring home riches? Disappear without trace? Return, but in disarray? One thing is certain, pirates will attack …
People seem to like seeing pages from my manuscript books? Mogget knows how to make an entrance, here he meets Sabriel on the very last page of the first ms. book for SABRIEL
So with the news of the new Old Kingdom book out a reminder this is what lies ahead. Both cross-over titles, YA or adult as perceived/published in different territories 😀
THE LEFT-HANDED BOOKSELLERS OF LONDON in October 2020
TERCIEL AND ELINOR in October 2021
A girl, her dog, and a vast library full of secrets. What could go wrong?
Never underestimate a Third Assistant Librarian . . .
Or more simply, the new UK edition of LIRAEL cover reveal!
Pre-order here (it's out very soon)
My predictive text bio has grasped the essence of the matter without being able to express it properly:
Garth Nix is an author who has a good idea and will do well in a great story story of the story and story story and then it was just done
Not only are there the three different 25th Anniversary editions of SABRIEL from my Australian, US and UK publishers out in 2021 but also this lovely pb box set of the original trilogy with the Leo and Diane Dillon covers, out 7 September in US/Canada.
Moving some books around and found my childhood copy of a book that has been very influential on my work, particularly on THE LEFT-HANDED BOOKSELLERS OF LONDON (though that is not a children’s fantasy). I took it to ALA hoping to get it signed and Susan Cooper very kindly did so.
While the reservoir under the palace in Belisaere (in my Old Kingdom books) was inspired by Yerebatan Sarnici in Istanbul, I didn’t know there was something similar, if more modern, not far away from home in Sydney, now the Tank Gallery of the AGNSW. Might be handy for filming 🤞
2/ There is also going to be a very special 25th anniversary *hardcover* of SABRIEL out on the same day featuring the Leo and Diane Dillon dust jacket art of the original first 1996 US edition as well!

2. Reply with a pic of yourself/friend/pet/stuffed toy etc with a copy of SABRIEL (preferably but not necessarily a 25th special edition)
22nd August I will randomly pick 12, will post worldwide

Some film/tv news for THE KEYS TO THE KINGDOM. As I always try to do, I've teamed up with people I think (and hope) understand the spirit of the books and have a real passion for the story. Onwards!
My almost daily email/tweet/post/actual conversation:
Questioner: There are more Old Kingdom Books than the original trilogy????!!!
Me: Yes.
Questioner: OMG etc
Manuscript notebooks. This lot includes the handwritten manuscripts of SABRIEL, LIRAEL, ABHORSEN, SHADE’S CHILDREN (about 20) and a bunch which are all story ideas, notes and fragments
If there were auditions for a live-action SABRIEL right now, Crystal’s Mogget would be in with a very good chance. **There aren’t, no screen news right now**
I took my cat, Mogget, to the vet and the Dr. asked if I'd named him after the character from the Old Kingdom series by
@garthnix
, which i did! We proceeded to nerd out for the next 5 minutes over our love of the books. First time in 14 years anyone got it! I am stupid happy.
1. A message hawk has arrived, announcing NEW editions of the Old Kingdom books in the UK, starting with SABRIEL very soon, this 23rd July! Pre-order here
More cover reveals to come each week for the whole series!
@HotKeyBooksYA
Regular convo success.
Uber driver: What do you do?
Me: I write books.
U: What kind?
Me (going for obvious reference): Fantasy, like Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings.
U: You wrote Harry Potter!
Me: Uh no, they’re by J. K. Rowling. I said like ...
U: You wrote Lord of the Rings!
A book always feels more real, more fully manifested in the world, when the ARCs arrive. The long conjuration, the summoning into being, nears completion...
Three editions for the readers
Downunder and across the seas
One book to bring them all
To some . . . er . . . happy reading.
Australian PB, US HC, UK HC
Simultaneous November 2021
(there is also still the possibility of an additional fourth Charter-mark only UK cover)
3. And don't forget, there will be a sixth Old Kingdom book next year: TERCIEL AND ELINOR. For those who may not remember, Terciel is Sabriel's father . . .
I just saw the sad news that Ursula K. Le Guin has died. I think I need to stop working, go for a walk with the dog, and give thanks for all her deep thought, wisdom and insight, distilled into so many massively influential books and stories.
Son GMing D&D: Your gnome already knows minor illusion.
Me (overhearing): Well, you'd expect that.
Son: What?
Me (miming pickaxe): Miner illusion.
Son: Dad!
Player: What language do gnomes speak?
Me: Alaskan.
(long pause)
Me: Nome is a city in Alaska
Son: Dad! Go away!
#Dadjokes
TERCIEL AND ELINOR is officially out tomorrow (Tuesday) in Australia, USA and UK. It is my 40th book, I think, counting the co-written ones and story collections. Despite this experience, it is impossible to predict how the book will go. Travel well, T&E. Do not look back.
Delayed a little getting to my house, but the beautiful US 25th Anniversary edition of SABRIEL joins the throng. All three special editions (US, UK and Australian) are out now.
I realised the other day that we haven’t announced my next book, out next year. It’s basically all done, just the copy-edit and proof-read to come. Must get on to that announcing part, with the what do you call ’em — details — and so on soon😀
I tidied my office today. From the visible book stacks (and there are many more boxes in another room) it is well past time to organise a giveaway of signed books. So I will do that soon (it will be Twitter based).
I have one Australian ARC of THE LEFT-HANDED BOOKSELLERS OF LONDON to give away (cover is kind of hybrid of US and UK editions). To have a chance reply here and tag (or name) your favourite bookshop. Open worldwide, randomly decided in about a week. Will be signed & dedicated.
Some may think my new mug is excessively large. I say:
Great is the Garth
Thirsty is his throat
Quaking are the small cups
And the stupid saucers
Give him gallons
Of hot, milk-strewn tea
For he has given up coffee
And sorely needs caffeine
Mug design by Anna Dadd for Dunoon
Not exactly complete, given CLARIEL and GOLDENHAND don't get a mention and there is the forthcoming TERCIEL AND ELINOR (2021) but, as always, nice to be included anyway!
I have been building a kind of shrine to some of my most significant childhood reading in the corner of my office, trying to collect the actual editions I read, usually from the library. Many other important books grace other shelves of mine, but this is a representative sample.
Here’s a page from one of my LIRAEL ms. books, showing me using the verso to make notes, in this case for Lirael’s encounter with the Stilken and finding the statuette of the Direputable Dog. With tiny sketch top left, a picture conveying many thoughts and feelings.
The murder was committed by Colonel Nix in the Library with a very pointy Aurealis Award! (Thank you to the Aurealis Award convener and judges, this striking award arrived today.)
@aurealisawards
I was just moving these two and Mogget’s bell came off! Uh oh …
(Mogget and the Disreputable Dog were made for me by a bookseller at Norwich Waterstones years ago, and reside on my desk.)
I realised today that when out walking and I encounter animals I nod and say “Hello Magenpie” to magpies, and “Hello doggo” to dogs, but I say “Hello cat” to cats. No special name. (Additional vocab at my parents’ semi-rural place “Fuck, snake!” But that’s not really a greeting.)
I've been printing out some book covers for use in presentations etc and accidentally created this graphic of various different (English-language) covers of my books. Not all of them are there (most have at least three different editions/covers) but it makes a nice graphic!
OLD KINGDOM
Five novels, two novellas so far . . .
(Because quite a number of people are surprised there is more than the original trilogy. These are the new Australian covers by
@S_Ciaffaglione
)
Possibly the most well-read LIRAEL I’ve signed this tour, from Becca in St Charles. Today, Decatur GA. Last stop on the US leg of the
#AngelMage
tour and on to the UK. All tour details
A terrifying Dead Hand! I bet you have a really great campaign, and thanks for sharing. As an old-time D&Der (since 1975, when I was 12) and role-player I love to see my books inspire any rpg activity.
It's done
The Abhorsen in my
#dnd5e
game needs a Dead Hand to fight.
Just for fun i'll tag
@garthnix
for his amazing work that inspired this campaign and
@matthewmercer
just because.
All three SABRIEL anniversary editions are now out in the world, and very beautiful they are, too! I am a very fortunate author. Thank you to everyone who has ever worked on, sold, bought, read or otherwise been involved in keeping me in the writing business for three decades.
The three 25th Anniversary hardcover editions of SABRIEL (US, UK, Australia) all out in August. The US and UK feature the Dillons artwork (with different type design), the Australian art by
@S_Ciaffaglione
2. Here's the cover as a still so it can be admired properly. It will be a paperback with flaps, lots of lovely design details including the seven bells etc Concept is by Alex Allden, design is by Sophie McDonnell and the artist is Gavin Reece.
To be fair I once had an Uber driver who immediately said “you must be Garth Nix” and had read all my books. Which was up there with being recognised at a Delta check-in at La Guardia ...
If you're dispirited with Twitter
Offering every loathsome critter
An opportunity to speak
Say it's full of people who are bitter
And intellectually no fitter
Than the mud in yonder creek
Please consider, take a look
There are some gems among the mud
and it's better than Facebook
I really am G. R. Nix (my middle name is Richard) but I’m thinking of adding another “R” middle name. Maybe “Richelieu” or “Ramekin” 😀 so I can be (wait for it):
G.R.R. Nix
Advance copies of the gorgeous British Anniversary edition of SABRIEL arrived this morning! Thank you
@HotKeyBooksYA
Design by Darcy Soper, art by Leo and Diane Dillon. I am a very fortunate author. (I will preview the other two anniversary editions in due course.)
If my Left-Handed Booksellers and Old Kingdom worlds collided ...
(I am helping my parents pack up books for a move and found this small treasure. It is, of course, about the ancient Egyptian funerary texts. Not the necromantic tome. Honest.)
