I help children to experience the true richness of mathematics. Director of I See Maths, primary maths consultant and author. I put my ideas on the table!
DECONSTRUCTING WORD QUESTIONS - Y6 OUT NOW:
I've spent 9 years in Y6. I've read huge amounts of research about PS. For 18 months, I've lived and breathed this resource in many classrooms. It's been through the fire! And I hope you like it👍
4 free Christmas Problem-Solving tasks (KS1 & KS2) with lots of build-up and extension tasks released Tuesday 7:30pm. Very Christmassy, full of logical thinking, accessible, fun! My gift to my wonderful profession. Pls share Tuesday's launch post far and wide 👍🎁
The plans for the live lessons are in place, starting Monday 9am Y3/4 and 10am Y5/6. Full details shared tomorrow plus a video to introduce myself & the project to children and parents. Will post 7:30pm tomorrow 👍
I See Problem-Solving - UKS2 has been released! 58 tasks, supports to build understanding, explain/extend tasks to deepen the challenge. Also, download the free 412-page Worked Examples presentation. The ultimate resource for teaching problem-solving!
The home lessons are coming! Everything will be posted here:
I hope the lessons challenge and inspire many children. I've made the introductory video to show to children & parents today/tomorrow before Monday's launch 👍
In the event of school closures, if there is demand, I'll run a series of live lessons. Let me know:
(a) If you'd point children from your schools towards this
(b) Tips for sessions
(c) How best to do this tech-wise (I've no idea!)
Would love to help if I can in this unique time

I want to do something generous to help all you amazing teachers in the lead up to Christmas (and to inspire your mathematicians). I was thinking of a little video lesson based on my festive problem-solving tasks. Would you consider using this? Other suggestions?
Have really enjoyed planning the 2020 Christmas tasks. Some twists from last year: videos to introduce 3 of the tasks, new challenges and lots of ways to extend each task. Lots to do! Out next Sunday (or soon after) 👍
SO much to say about this, impossible to fit in a tweet. It will help ALL children to be able to break down multi-step word questions and make connections between different questions/tasks. PS for the many, not the few! More details in early Jan...
Here are 4 sets of Christmas maths tasks/challenges:
The videos introduce the tasks and build the necessary skills. Then there are some great challenges/logic puzzles to intrigue and inspire. All festive, all free. Spread the word and enjoy!🎁🎄
HOME LESSONS
Here's the provisional plan for rest of this school year. I will stop whenever schools re-open, but wanted to map out the whole academic year so you know what's coming! Let me know if you'd suggest any changes:
I've developed a huge bank of subtizing resources and number sense games on this 'Early Number Sense' page. A big emphasis on chn seeing numbers nested in larger numbers. Hope you find them useful!
I've taken 10 cohorts through the Y6 SATS and so am well versed in the pressures! I'm putting together a big bank of resources & training to teach children to break down word questions, such a key skill. Join in:
A small selection of the place value tasks from the I See Reasoning eBooks. About 200 tasks per eBook to deepen thinking across the curriculum.
KS1:
LKS2:
UKS2:
Exploring different number sentences. Let me know what you think: what you like/don't like, what you'd change, whether you already use similar images, why you wouldn't use it...
Every opinion hugely appreciated 👍
Delighted to share 4 free Christmas problem-solving tasks, KS1 & KS2, with my wonderful profession!
Each task: build-up video, main challenge, extend/create tasks. Hope they are thought-provoking, fun & festive - spread the word! 🎅 🎁
In the event of schools being closed, a plan is forming for live lessons:
Hope to give children a feeling of engaging in a big, shared experience - and I hope they learn a lot! Please tell me what I can improve and spread the word👍
We are closing in on 10,000 views of the videos today, very humbling and very exciting! I'm busy getting tomorrow finished, will post in the morning when they are on. Thanks for all the amazing messages and pictures of work. And children, WELL DONE! 😃
I See Problem-Solving - UKS2 will be released on Sunday 21st October! Will allow teachers to systematically teach and extend problem-solving skills.
How it will make PS accessible:
How is will deepen PS skills:
It’s been suggested that I could make some simple videos to explain key maths ideas to parents (eg what’s an array and why do we use it). Will make some if it doesn’t already exist & would be widely used. Thoughts? Advice? What you use that I could promote?
Been using these fraction cards (printed on card, cut out) for finding equivalent fractions, converting between improper f/mixed numbers, modelling + - with fractions:
CHRISTMAS GIVAWAY: Four Christmas challenges for children of different ages. Includes an all-new logic puzzle! Merry Christmas - I hope this helps in the festive run-up 🎅

Think I’m about half-way through I See Reasoning - KS1. Tasks to get children talking, show concepts visually, go deep. Big job now is trialling and improving! Super excited 😉
Delighted to have completed the set of KS2 Reasoning eBooks. Spent 2 years writing them (apart from 3 months for online lessons), AMAZING to have finished! I want all my resources to be packed full of inspiration whilst being easy to use. All listed here:
DELIGHTED to be releasing TWO eBooks on Sunday:
I See Reasoning - Y5
I See Reasoning - Y6
Huge resources, crammed with my favourite and best ideas. Join my training sessions Tuesday/Wednesday to see how they can be used:
8 months writing, 5 days to go...
FREE WEBINAR SERIES COMING SOON! Fortnightly, Thursdays 6-7pm
An expert panel (and me) discuss some of the most pressing issues facing all educators:
You can ask questions & interact. AMAZING GUESTS. Ideal for school leaders, teachers, parents, anyone! 😀
Theme for this week's posts: purposeful variation. Drawing attention to specific aspects of the mathematics, helping children to make new connections. Give your thoughts, share your own examples, improve my ideas... Would love to develop a discussion!
The plans for the free Christmas problem-solving lessons are underway! Hope they are fun, thought-provoking and lead to children designing their own tasks. This week I’m v busy, will release early the week after 🎅 🎁
I SEE REASONING - KS1 ON SALE NOW! 281 visual, thought-provoking tasks for interweaving reasoning in every area of the KS1 maths curriculum:

In a place value unit I always get children positioning numbers on number lines with different start/end values. I've used these examples in KS1 and KS2:
I See Problem-Solving will be released tomorrow morning. I can't describe how long it's taken or how excited I am about it! Final tweaks being made to support features/worked examples now...
Currently working on the 'Task Family Teacher Guide' pages for I See Problem-Solving - Y2. The idea is having families of tasks that you can use & adapt to suit your class. Different tasks, scaffolds and challenges that revolve around the same theme. It's gathering pace!
Making rapid progress on I See Reasoning - Y3 and I See Reasoning - Y4! In my optimistic moments I think it will be ready in January. Loads of visuals, breaking concepts into small steps and a huge range of thought-provoking qs 😀
Creating prompts to deconstruct calculation so children only have to focus on one skill at a time. What you like? What you'd adapt/change/add? All comments and suggestions VERY welcome!
Initially removing information from qs so children can estimate, think about what the answer could/could not be, think about info needed to answer the question. Here's an example (could even start without the rectangle):
I See Reasoning - KS1 update: fractions section done, measurement on the way. 10 days (ish) of writing still to go, 2 weeks of trialling/make improvements then we are good to go!

This is the last page of the I See Problem-Solving - UKS2 'Worked Examples'. It's a whopping 408 pages in total, modelling the solutions to each task step-by-step. Only got the answers to finish and to proof read it all, released next Sunday!
I'm writing new training videos that are designed to be built into your INSET days. Very practical ideas for developing reasoning routines and building children as problem-solvers:
I See Problem-Solving UKS2 will be written this summer ready for late-Sept release. Free worked examples as PowerPoint & PDF, also 'explain' features added to every task. Explicitly teach PS skills! The updated blog explains in full:
So often children default to a count-in-ones strategy to border 10. Subitizing games to address this? Tell me what you like, don't like or would improve. Could add this to my free resources...
Over the next 10 years, I want my work to grow children as problem-solvers. I want logic, diversity & creativity to be at the heart of primary maths. The Christmas tasks (out 7:30pm tomorrow) will give a glimpse of that. Let me know how children respond & future improvements 👍
53 'I See Problem Solving - UKS2' tasks written, 10 more planned. Worked examples nearly done. It going to be my biggest and most exciting product yet. Off to Italy for a week, then back with all the details and a release date! ✈️🇮🇹☀️🏖️
Deconstructing Word Questions - Y6 out in 7 days! Coherently teaching ALL children to break down word questions. 1 person who RTs gets the resource for free.

EXCITED!
I See Problem-Solving - LKS2 IS NOW RELEASED!
54 tasks, with supports to help all children access questions and lots of extensions to deepen thinking! Also, download the free Worked Examples file. The ultimate resource for teaching problem-solving:
I've built a bank of multiplication cards and short presentations for helping children to SEE relationships between ✖️table facts. They are all here, all free:
UPDATE: I’m in the early stages of writing I See Problem-Solving for LKS2 and for KS1 (two separate resources). Want to trial them both simultaneously. SOOOO excited about them! More details to follow in the next few weeks...
I used to teach children written methods for calculation and then hope that they would remember every step. Now, I use I See Reasoning prompts like this to get children to analyse specific parts of calculation procedures. More examples:
My home maths lessons will initially be YouTube videos (watch at any time). Tech permitting, I'd love to make them live lessons eventually (recorded too). But for now, I don't want to clash with Joe Wicks fitness! Busy planning...
Full details:
I'm delighted to be able to offer ONLINE TRAINING FOR PRIMARY TEACHERS! The sessions will start after the Easter holidays. All the details can be found here:
Continuing my obsession with non-counting calculation, cards to help children see how single-digit numbers are partitioned when bordering 10. Free here:
This simple task worked better than I'd expected last week. Gave chn one minute to work out how many squares on the 15x6 grid. Looked at how they broke it up. Then they found other possible ways (see mocked up examples of what they did). Led into this ISR question:
The response today to the launch has been breathtaking and I'm very humbled. Easy to find problem-solving questions, very hard to coherently teach PS skills. I hope this helps & saves you time! Thanks for every order, RT, comment, like - means so much to me 👊
Free resources for building early number sense (mainly for EYFS&Y1). Cards and pre-made games with a focus on recognising quantities and visualising bonds for single-d numbers. Use, share, DM me with ideas for things I could add!
Two reason why I prefer the red to the blue:
1. More likely that the children give you the form of response you want (rather than shouting the answer out)
2. The last thing children think about is the question (rather than the instruction)
Deconstructing Word Questions - Y6 out this Jan! £30. The video outlines 15 months work in 138 seconds...
4 more videos (released soon) will explain in more detail.
One person who RTs this tweet gets the resource for free when released 👍

Happy 1st birthday I See Reasoning - UKS2! Delighted to share the techniques I've used to deepen thinking in maths, amazing it's had such wide appeal. Thanks for every order AND every photo you've sent showing it in action, very humbling 👍👍👍
40 today! Celebrating in London with my wonderful family, feel very blessed. My life has been SO enriched over the last 8 years by all the the people I have met and for every interaction I’ve had on here. Thank you, wonderful people 😊
My elder daughter hurt herself today and was upset, so my 5 year-old daughter wrote her notes to cheer her up. The first one said ‘I love you’. This was her second note 🤣
Here, lots of free maths games for adults to play with children. Enjoyable, a mix of fluency and strategy. And check out Achi, a strategy game I’ve recently discovered:
Cognitive load can be prohibitively high for multi-step worded qs. Been building up questions in stages & making questions minimally different to lessen this barrier and focus children’s thinking on specific points:
Children are often able to construct numbers using hundreds, tens and ones. But how about their ability to position numbers on a blank number line and consider the relative size of different quantities? This blog gives some ideas:
I'm passionate about the coherent teaching/development of problem-solving skills. Working hard on these resources which I believe will be game-changing. Lots of writing, trialling, editing to be done - loving the process!
NEW PRODUCTS TO TRIAL!
The first sample tasks I See Problem-Solving - KS1 and I See Problem-Solving - KS2 will be mailed to everyone on the mailing list this Friday. Try them out, tell me how they can be improved! Please spread the word. Sign up here:

This Tuesday (12:30pm) and Wednesday (6:30pm) I will describe my ideas for helping all children to deconstruct word questions. I want to find out how my ideas can be improved upon. This is one of the questions that I'm going to look at. FREE, ALL WELCOME:
Busy proof-reading and finishing the answers pages. Woke up to the PV section, got up to the perimeter section so far! I'm a last-minute guy. It's HUGE and I hope it's going to be the ultimate inspirational 'every day' resource
The front cover is done, all 58 tasks written, 38 worked examples completed. 20 worked examples to go, lots of checking, answers page, then it's ready! Last sample task linked to PV being sent out on Tuesday. Exciting!
I See Problem-Solving - LKS2: 10 months in production, many great classroom moments, now 54 tasks ready to share! Minor tweaks being made, then released THIS SUNDAY! Here's what to expect:
Love this from

Y3 & Y4: 3 Consecutive Numbers Challenge
Y5 & Y6: 5 Consecutive Numbers Challenge
Watch at any time, let me know how you get on!
Enjoy the challenge...
I'm always looking for low entry, high ceiling tasks. My favourite task for this remains 'How Many Ways?' tasks. Within the same questions, there's huge stretch going from level 1 to level 3 (in this case, knowing there are 7 answers)
Delighter to offer online training to teachers after the Easter hols. So much to share, no longer restricted by geography! Hope teams of teachers join in from schools & work together to implement. All sessions recorded for participants:
Thanks so much for every RT, order and positive comment today, massively appreciated! 👍👍👍
I hope they become your 'go to' for great ideas! The tasks have given me so many great moments.
