Fyodor already knew that Dazai would hang up unexpectedly at random times. And he didn't mind that. As long as he could hear his…chess partner's voice, it filled in his loneliness quite a bit.

Dazai: Alright, I'm never calling you again. I got all the information I needed. (Lied) Fyodor: Dazai-kun, I enjoyed your company. That was way too honest for Dazai. So he hung up quickly before he replied and made it worse and made their conversation go on even longer.

Sometimes, Dazai can hear Fyodor's coworker through the phone too. Though he could barely hear it and couldn't understand their very short conversation in Russian, it felt strangely soothing listening to Fyodor's voice when he speaks in his mother tongue.

Don’t ask me how they found each others number. Small conversations, perfect company, while playing chess together on the computer during break. They enjoyed each other's company more than they liked to admit.

At first, they would always lie and say "oh, it's an accident" or "I'm threatening you, haha" those were all excuses to talk to each other. To fill in each other's boredom during work, to distract themselves from everything. Maybe they could've been great friends.

Their conversations were always short, but they loved hearing each other's voice through the phones. Dazai feels a chill whenever he hears Fyodor's voice- it feels like Fyodor is physically there with him. Fyodor loves hearing Dazai's voice, it's almost like a lullaby for him.
