(An off topic PSA).Vatican Museums are by far the worst museum experience I've ever had. Avoid at all costs; absolutely nothing about it is worth it. As a lover of museums, every aspect is designed to be miserable, up until it's designed to extract as much cash as possible.

Europe trips have taught me that "the best" sites are overcrowded and overrated. Secondary sites offer the same core with a far greater experience. Skip Pompeii and do Ostia Antica. Skip Versailles and do Palazzo Reale or Caserta. I had an hour without seeing anyone else today.

This is why I dump on modern Disney design so much, and especially the Marvel slop, because it is a movie carbon copy instead of imagination. There is no concept of the built area you see being part of something much greater. And so it all seems so very small and shallow.

Walking around, you see glimpses through doorways. Sometimes it's just a workshop or an apt. courtyard. But other times it's a mouldering palace, or tunnels that go way underground. Good themed design is more like a book than a movie. Your mind should fill in what isn't there.

Being in Napoli is mesmerizing, and helps to understand what makes great themed design. The environment is ever changing: narrow alleys and wide avenues, open piazza and covered walkways. There is endless depth, of design and necessity and time changing everything.
