This has always been a consistent part of Jake's character. He feels loss so strongly that the only thing he can do is shut down before it overwhelms him. He chooses instead to focus on the people he loves, the people he has yet to fail, and be better for them. Be their support.
James saying that Jake doesn't know how to grieve and immediately goes into a protective state for the people around him, all of the annoying Jake haters who said he felt nothing when he died and continue to misunderstand his character I hope you know how stupid you all are lol

Even though the movies could not make it more clear that Jake loves Lo’ak with every fiber of his being, the visual dictionary plainly spells it out too. Grief and trauma makes people into the worse versions of themselves and they often say things they don’t mean
Jake has never hated Lo’ak, grief is complex and we all know Jake has never been the best at communicating or healing. Jake’s treatment of Lo’ak is a facet for his own self hatred and insecurity, and you can see that slip out when he’s arguing with Neytiri.

People make mistakes in the midst of grief. They lash out and say things they don't mean. Jake redirected all of his own self hatred and blame onto Lo'ak in that moment and you can see him regret it the moment the words leave his mouth.

This is what I think Jake believes to some extent and I’m not saying tommy would’ve definitely had the exact same life, I’m saying Jake would at least think Tommy would’ve had a chance to a different life on Pandora like Norm or Max
