does anybody have recommendations for niche / interesting things to do in Tokyo? I've spent ~6 weeks there in total so I've done everything obvious. also can speak Japanese if that opens anything up. will be there for 4-5 days end of august on the way back from another trip.

muscle tension is a physical symptom of trying to manage your experience. when you observe that the thing you’re trying to manage is empty, i.e. arises from your own mind, the process of managing experience with coarse methods automatically stops making sense and the mind gives.

emptiness is the antidote to muscle tension.

"tone" is just an approximation, I have no idea how to describe it. I just get a strong feeling when I encounter it.

there's a noticeable difference in tone when someone is treating a particular thing or concept as real and fixed vs when they've seen that it's empty of inherent existence.

@vincent_yc_li @nopranablem also tangent but I think there's a whole thing going on where consequences in modern life lack the somatic immediacy of wilderness life and death situations, but they play on attachment instead. like prehistorically it was us united against nature but now it's us vs each other.

challenge 3 is more open-ended. `examples/universal.tm` contains a universal turing machine that can simulate other machines. It's very, very slow. What performance improvements are possible without changing the input format, if any?. there's a summary of how the machine works.

challenge 2: a reversible TM is a machine that has a bijective transition function. this means it cannot erase information. `examples/reverse_seq.tm` is such a machine; it reverses a sequence (e.g. A A A B -> B A A A). but my implementation generates one bit of entropy; you can.

the code is here and hopefully the syntax is pretty straightforward. challenge 1: `examples/is_prime.tm` defines a TM that checks if a unary number N is prime. right now it does trial division on all numbers <= N. can you make it stop at sqrt(N)?.

was playing with turing machines this morning and here are some challenges for anyone interested:.

1) a turing machine squares 2 in unary.2) the program for that.3) a universal turing machine simulates the first turing machine, yielding 4 cells containing "1 1 1" which is the encoded version of "1".4) the program in (2) encoded into the tape of the universal machine

then the new life becomes clear, simple, and stable. but there’s grief in losing the visions of transcendence and seeking meaning in much humbler things. it’s a hard choice, and it comes up repeatedly in different forms, testing will and patience over and over.

the thing about really investigating and dismantling all of the illusions, really healing, is that you have to rebuild your way of life afterwards. but this time without the idea that anything or anyone is coming to save you, without resentment or repression, without fantasy.
