For the past 7 years on Wednesday afternoons, people knew they could come for a saintly former missionary priest hearing Confessions. Now, I hear Confessions at that time. I feel like the rookie called up from the minors to replace the hall of famer.

At his final community meeting, Father simply yet powerfully exhorted us on the witness of our chastity, the important role of Mary’s intercession for us as Friars, & to persevere in the battle. “The temptations always come but they cannot overcome us.” What a gift he is.

Fr. Justus Pokrzewinski, OP, the epitome of a saintly Dominican, is moving to Chicago tomorrow. He exudes the noble simplicity of a life completely committed to Jesus & the life & mission of the Order. Please pray for him & pray the Lord will raise up more men like him.

10 years ago, I was ordained a deacon. Thanks be to God! (The story of why I was ordained by myself in our priory chapel is long & difficult, but that particular cross was one of the greatest blessings of my life.)

It was a simple comment but something we see everyday at a growing Newman Center. When you have reverent liturgy, preach & teach lovingly what the Church professes, & build communities where people can be themselves with an identity rooted in Christ, young people show up.

One of the brothers had never seen “Sister Act.” We watched it last night. At one point, he turned to me & said, “30 years ago, we really thought being hip would bring young people back to Mass. Turns out, what they really wanted and are flocking to is the more traditional.”

Celebrating my father’s 70th birthday weekend with my siblings and in-laws in Utah. Family is such a blessing. It was my first church, where faith & love were instilled & many values & lessons taught.

Rarely, nowadays, do people come up to me in airports to talk. The other day, in the Salt Lake City airport, I was not 20 yards from walking off a plane before I was approached for Confession and a very moving and needed spiritual conversation. God is good!

Many other factors exist, but I was struck by how they all talked about a journey for meaning, identity, purpose, & community that led them to the Church. Often, they were spurred on by the emptiness of what the world tells them is the answer for all of those desires.
