A moment of romance in Ten Tigers from Kwangtung

Same goes for the film scans floating around. The quality of the print and scanning means they’re unlikely to be “accurate” (whatever that means), but I’m happy to have them. The 35mm scan of T2 is my preferred way to watch it. It looks cool.

They’re a neat thing to have around. A curiosity for people who have already seen a movie too many times. The Shining looks pretty cool that way. But they are not The Movie and shouldn’t be treated as such.

It’s so easy to not be weird about open matte scans, and yet so few achieve it.

Not enough people have seen this movie

The first gun shot in this is insane. The flash, the glimpse of a hole, the camera push in, all in just a few frames. Fantastic.

Masterpiece.

There are so many online interview shows and somehow none of the hosts have any charisma at all. Total duds across the board. Except the trackstar guy, he’s fun.

A pattern of choices over a body of work? Now we’re talking. But vague statements about rhythm/motion aren’t going to cut it.

Every editor has odd cuts! Sometimes it’s a questionable choice, sometimes it’s covering the work of other people, and unless someone who worked on the film explains what happened we have no way of knowing. Even other editors can only guess.

That doesn’t mean editors are off limits, even very famous ones, and I respect the attempt, but it means lofty statements about Thelma Schoonmaker are going to need more work than saying she’s fucking inept, has no rhythm, and some cherry picked odd cuts.

Editors are difficult to criticize. So much of their work is hidden from view. What footage did they have to work with? What frames were before/after? How much did the director dictate the construction of the scene?.

Only people who understand editing better than Thelma Schoonmaker (me) understand this.

You know if you really think about it, if you’re very smart like me, Thelma Schoomaker is fundamentally very inept.
