St Mary’s Melbury Bubb Dorset - the font is made from the upturned shaft of an C11 Anglo Saxon cross. The carvings are from ‘the Bestiary’ an ancient collection of Christian symbolism; a stag, lions/panthers and other strange long-tailed lizard like creatures… #FontsonFriday

Perfect day yesterday to see the barrows at Oakley Down #Dorset in low sunshine. The disc barrow is huge, photographed from the top of its neighbour, you can see us perched on top! Wonderful place. #TombTuesday

For the last #FindsFriday of 2022, the Badbury Stone, found just up the road from me, carved with daggers similar to those to be seen at Stonehenge. Photo’d here at the fab World of Stonehenge exhibition earlier this year.

The Tournai black marble font at Winchester cathedral, dating to 1150, depicts the story of St Nicholas. Wonderfully carved with fabulous details! #FontsOnFriday

Was hanging on hoping this wouldn’t happen, but I’ll so miss all my archaeology, history and medieval church buddies here who have taught me so much fab stuff. I’m on mastodon @froglet33@home.social and may figure it out eventually….😕

On this very soggy day in #Dorset, here’s a burst of better weather from my weekend wander round Badbury Rings, bathed in autumn sunshine, together with its ‘sister’ hill of High Wood, site of a prehistoric enclosure #HillfortsWednesday

The font of the church of Lady St Mary, Wareham Dorset, depicting the Twelve Apostles. Hexagonal, made from lead and dating to 1100. The only hexagonal lead font in existence, so says the sign! #FontsOnFriday
