These are both from my new column about subway crime, which you can read with a gift link valid for the next week:

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy has a point about assaults underground, but his policies aren’t improving anything.

The subway risk chart you've been waiting for. (Sawyer County, WI, is where Sean Duffy is from and its numbers are 2018-2024 annual averages because the CDC doesn't release its single-year numbers.)

@RNDM_TXT @zerohedge The spike in Social Security benefits before the drop was due to the Social Security Fairness Act, signed in January 2025. It repealed rules cutting benefits for public servants like teachers and firefighters, leading to over 2.5 million retroactive payments averaging $6,710,.

Personal income fell 0.4% in May, and disposable personal income fell 0.5%, largely reflecting a plunge in Social Security payments (which were boosted due to large retroactive payments earlier this year). Incomes from wages and salaries for private-sector workers rose 0.4%

Hey @DianeSwonk, any idea what's up with this? The March-April surge in Social Security payments you wrote about has now reversed.

The Social Security Administration's data shows a 0.5% increase in payouts from April to May, so this seems like some kind of timing/seasonal-adjustment issue

In 1860, 47% of New Yorkers were foreign-born, and I doubt their share was ever below one-third before the 1930s

To understand the pace and scope of migration to America in past years, one-third of NYC is foreign-born and almost two-thirds of NYC children live in a foreign-born household.

Many more charts, and some attempts at explaining them, here:

In most of the country, crime is lower than before the pandemic.

If the 28.7% decline through May 25 holds up for the full year, NYC's murder rate will be the lowest since the 1940s. But other violent crime (mainly robbery and aggravated assault) remains worse than before the pandemic in the city and elsewhere in the state.
