what are people looking for when they want you to "propose a study" for an interview? like genuinely any help especially if you have been on the interviewing side (not that I have an interview or anything obviously👀)

writing future research proposals is just rapidly oscillating between "this idea slaps, they should hire me right here right now" and "i have no thoughts, what is regression, how do you do the things"
