The Battle of the Bulge began on December 16, 1944. It was Hitler's last, desperate offensive on the Western Front. Troops fought in freezing temperatures and deep snow. This battle was the largest and bloodiest single battle fought by US troops during WWII.

William D. Hawkins served in the Marine Corps during WWII. During the Battle of Tarawa, Hawkins led a scout-sniper platoon on Betio Island. He was mortally wounded while leading an assault on a machine gun position and was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor:
