One-third of mentees and 68.8% (22/32) of mentors reported ongoing relationships beyond the 10-month formal program. Four key qualitative themes were identified: “broad benefits” of mentoring, “it’s a relationship and it takes work”, “giving back” and “program foundations”.

This study provides evidence that students require the opportunity to experience working with older adults in placements and given mentorship opportunities to work specifically with older adults.

Participants discussed that older adults could be interesting to talk to and be a source of wisdom, using examples from their experiences with older relatives.

Five focus groups were conducted with 17 first-semester undergraduate students aged 19–43 years.

Well-designed studies on allied health transition and transition interventions are needed to build evidence on effective interventions and support.

A total of 15 studies were included. Various allied health populations, interventions, timeframes, program content, and learning modes were used but not well described. There was a misalignment between allied health graduates' expectations and practice reality.
