The correct answer here is 0: If foo and bar are hard linked, mv foo bar has no effect and foo continues to exist. This is in fact explicitly required by POSIX! I asked Kirk McKusick about this at @eurobsdcon and his best guess was that SysV had a bug and POSIX standardized it.
Without testing, what output do you think this sequence of commands should produce? # touch foo # ln foo bar # mv foo bar # ls foo 2>/dev/null # echo $?
