‘protest songs’ are protest in name only if they're not perceived and sung as such by the audience.artists can write/sing whatever they want. but artistic goals and political goals often don't coincide. being an artist and bringing about political changes are two different things.

they would organize, make propaganda and come up with slogans aiming at a desirable level of ambiguity. political messaging is a practical matter, not just self-expression. it's not about what you want to sing, it's about what you want people to think and how you want them to act.

art is a bad vehicle for delivering political messages. political power/importance of art is exaggerated. if artists actually pursued political goals, they wouldn't be artists. they would become politicians. it wouldn't be in their interests to make art that can be misinterpreted.
i wrote an essay my senior year at ucla about how most “american anthems” are actually protest songs calling out the government but most americans don’t realize it 😭 i used this song and american teenager by ethel cain as examples bc history always repeats itself.

@LevellingSpirit @KyrillPotapov @phophing2 @aretheygay I think the anti-historicism is (unfortunately) in line with much of the positivist tradition but opposition to intuition in my view is foundational to positivism and rejecting appeals to intuition is part of even extremely crude forms of positivism.

maybe there is a mirror situation with analytic philosophy which is caricatured as just ben shapiro-style rhetoric. but i doubt it’s to blame for transphobia. my impression was that it's always at odds with ‘common sense’ and it can ‘logic its way’ to counterintuitive conclusions.
