israhell funded funded & trained mobutu’s military dictatorship, in turn IOF has been in DRC since the 60s. the us+israhell military industrial complex is at the center of the labor and mineral exploitation.
I don’t lack discipline, I lack community. I’ve spent so much time criticizing myself for not getting xyz done, for lacking consistency, all while ignoring the fact that so many of the things I do alone are supposed to be done in community.
If you can understand that racism, colorism, ableism, fatphobia, etc. play a role into who you desire sexually/romantically, you should be able to understand how they influence who we desire as friends. Friendships are not untouched by oppressive systems.
I want all of you to know that during Shakira’s performance, when they were dancing to a guitar instrumental after Waka Waka, that was Congolese music! Congolese music is very popular in Colombia.
Capitalism takes community away from you & then tries to convince you that because as an individual, you can’t complete communal tasks, there’s something wrong with you. There’s no amount of self care that can replace our need for community care.
I will not criticize myself for struggling to cook & clean when these are tasks to be shared with others. I will not criticize myself for being inconsistent with spiritual practices when I’m supposed to be journeying with elders & other community members.
Told my roommate that as long as COVID is hospitalizing & killing ppl I’m not ok w/ gatherings in the apt & that is a boundary for me. She said I need to learn to compromise & not give ultimatums. Compromising…to put your social life over my health? People are very audacious.
@Breliloquy
It's like when ppl say "oh we're using humor as a coping mechanism" for things that aren't even affecting them. How you gonna use humor as a coping mechanism when *you* don't have anything to cope from regarding whatever the situation is? How?
Living w/ someone who has a bookcase full of radical books & says they’re an abolitionist but doesn’t treat me w/ care is a very unsettling & depressing experience. The way you treat people in your everyday life will always say more about your politics than who you say you are.
not engaging with any of these posts on congo. they’re remixed every few years, always have misinformation, lack political education resources & tangible ways to help, aren’t made in connection w/ community organizing being done in congo.
Caribeños tryna place my Spanish accent is always interesting cuz I can tell they’re thinking “She kinda sounds like me but…kinda not.” I was talking to a Dominican client tonight; it’s our third convo. As I’m talking about his case he goes, “Perdon pero de donde tu ere”😂
Coming of age movies often show glimpses of how notions of beauty affect friendships. You can see this in the characters who are the "popular girls" & how they choose who can be in the group. Ex: popular girls won't befriend new girl bc they think she's ugly.
Think about who you are friends with. Look at your photos with friends. Who is represented? Who is not? There you will see how oppressive systems & notions of beauty influence who we are friends with.
Two years ago I found out about champeta, the first contemporary Black Colombian music genre. It’s heavily rooted in soukous, a Congolese music genre. Here’s a playlist I made of champeta songs.
This thread is horrifying. Look at how militarized police force is being used to forcefully evict Black mothers & their children. Enacting all this violence because property and profits are more important than the livelihoods of Black people. Solidarity w/
@moms4housing
.
I didn’t have this accent before visiting Cuba. Wasn’t even there long but I think it stuck cuz Spanish from Cuba/PR/DR is similar to Lingala. When Congolese people first heard Cuban Spanish in the 1940s, some of them thought it was a Congolese language that they didn’t know.
Every time it goes like this
Me: Soy de la República Democrática del Congo
Them: 😲
Me: y nací en España por eso hablo español
Them: 🤔
Me: pero hablo así por pasar tiempo con caribeños
Them: 😁
Resources on what’s happening the Congo with concrete context rather than just “pay attention to the Congo”. Definitive conversations, also this book has been going around as another resource
if I was to make infographics on drc in response to the ongoing genocide in palestine, they would be on the history of the us & israhell oppressing drc & the importance of congolese-palestinian solidarity, not the liberal nonsense that is going around.
It angers me how it is socially acceptable for adults to step in if an adult is yelling at another adult but if an adult is yelling at a child it’s not socially acceptable to step in because “it’s not your kid.”
Thinking of Emilsen Manyoma, a Black Colombian activist & her husband Jose Javier Rodallega, who were assassinated four years ago today. May they Rest In Peace & Power & may we continue to fight for Black liberation globally.
She said she will change her plans for this wknd but that when this “wave” is over she will have a gathering & “I can make arrangements that best suit me.”
I…return to sender. Ngai naza zoba te. Niangalakata. Si tu me quieres joder, yo te jodo el triple.
Palenque de San Basilio is a Black Colombian town, a community created by African slaves who escaped. Many of these Africans came from the Congo and Angola area. The people of Palenque speak Palenquero, a Spanish based creole which has roots in Kikongo.
as someone who loves kissing, the amount of time I've gone without kissing deeply pains me. it is not healthy or sustainable for me to be living this way.
the last time these posts went viral was 2020 when end sars was in the media…it’s very unserious that drc is just brought up when other countries are being uplifted & the “silent holocaust” language is not it.
case in point, this post was made october 2020, same time as end sars, and now it’s going viral again. promise you that none of these bullet points have helped congolese people & just provide engagement for the op.
Thinking of Emilsen Manyoma today, a Black Colombian woman & human rights activist. She & her husband were assassinated in 2017. May they both rest in peace & power.
This reminds me, there's been quite a few times now that I've heard Lingala in reggaeton songs. The words are in Spanish, but the way some of them are pronounced align w/ words that Lingala. The first time it was w/ a Myke Towers song. In another life I wanna study linguistics!
People really lack critical thinking when it comes to talking about age gaps and relationships. The focus is always on legality & people being grown. No analysis on power dynamics whatsoever.
Two history books on Congo by Congolese authors:
1) The Congo from Leopold to Kabila: A People's History by Georges Nzongola-Ntalaja 2) The History of Congo by Ch. Didier Gondola
*ps, use DRC or Congo & not "the Congo"
This video gives me allll the diaspora feels. It's a video of Palenquero babies drumming with Congolese music playing in the background.
Source:
(I recommend following him on IG)
I keep seeing people recommend Cobalt Red by Siddharth Kara so I wanna share this. Please be critical of what is said to be a "resource on Congo," there's a lot of misinformation going around.
“we keep us safe” in action. hate that adults did not protect them & proud of them for how they supported each other. praying they are protected & cared for🕯️
My Boricua friend said she was eating malanga & I was like I have no idea what that is but I know the word is from Congo Basin. Googled it & it's in Kikongo. The more I learn about Black LatAm cultures, the more I learn how so many words used in LatAm come from Central Africa.
The song I’m referring to here is La Cama. The way Myke Towers pronounces “humedad” at :46 sounds like umela/koumela in Lingala. I’m gonna start writing down other examples I come across.
All three artists covered are Nigerian. Why not just say Nigeria instead of Africa? This is like those listicles that will be about "African music" but 95% of artists in the list will be Nigerian or Ghanaian.
Plis. We are tired.
Colombia has the 2nd largest African descendant population in S. America & 3rd largest in Latin America as a whole. This is part one of a three part series in English on Afro-Colombians.
This is a documentary in Spanish, on the Palenquero language. I showed this to my parents a few years ago and when they heard the man singing at 5:03, they said "Wow, he sounds like us."❤️
Black Colombians have historically experienced systemic violence and continue to face violence today. This is a documentary in English on the Afro-Colombians of La Toma, in Northern Cauca, Colombia and their relationship with land.
Life update: I recently started working as an immigration defense social worker & because of that, I’m moving to NYC today.
I’m really excited about this new chapter in my life & grateful for all who have supported & cared for me along the way.
Bazurto All Stars, a Colombian group, paid tribute to Extra Musica, a Congolese group, through this song called El Bololo, which is a rendition of the popular song Etat Major.
This is wild. After the Washington Post wrote an obituary for *Cuban-American* author H.G. Carrillo, the newspaper & the man’s husband found out he completely fabricated his Cuban identity.
Petrona Martinez was my introduction to Colombian folk music. She is also known as La Reina del Bullerengue and is one of the most important Afro-Colombian singers.
My grandmother died & that's been heavy. We never met in person (I was hoping next year that would finally happen) & we didn't develop a relationship bc we don't speak the same languages. My mom only saw her once in the last 30 yrs. Border imperialism takes so much from us.
Hearing children be yelled/cursed at in public always makes me sad. Children & caregivers deserve so much more resources & care than what they are offered.
The fact that the “resources on Congo” being shared around are books & documentaries by non Congolese people is just further proof that this “raising awareness” is not about building solidarity. Whataboutism is so damaging.
It should be assumed that none of these popular books on Congo by non Congolese people are reliable resources. Like pls, let's think about the coloniality of writing other people's history.
Congo is overlooked/erased when people are discussing music, the transatlantic slave trade, forced migration, genocide ... so many things. This is why it’s so important for us Congolese people to be telling our own stories. Nobody else has the range.
I'm 27. If someone in their late 20s was pursuing my 21 year old sister, that would be a huge red flag & I would be really concerned. I always tell my sisters that just because a relationship is legally acceptable, that doesn't mean it can't be predatory.
Garifuna people, who are Black Indigenous people, have continuously been fighting to stay on their ancestral lands. All around the world, people are subjected to state violence because the state values money over people. Land back for Indigenous people everywhere.
it's so demoralizing to continuously have to remind people that we are still experiencing a pandemic and that the easiest thing we can do to care for ourselves and each other is wear a mask
Two years ago I found out about champeta, the first contemporary Black Colombian music genre. It’s heavily rooted in soukous, a Congolese music genre. Here’s a playlist I made of champeta songs.
Learn about the experiences of Black people in other countries. When antiblackness is global, people talking about wanting to leave the US because of racism is flawed on so many levels.
Parents will get upset that their children don’t tell them certain things, meanwhile they’re the ones that haven’t nurtured a relationship w/ their kids where their kids feel like they can approach their parents. It’s the responsibility of parents to create open communication.
Decolonizing Trauma Work by Renee Linklater is an amazing book. This book covers trauma, healing, mental health, wholistic wellness, psychiatry, community care, etc. from Indigenous perspectives. I wrote a reflection about it on IG:
Here’s a playlist of Congolese music. There’s older songs as well as current songs. Congolese music has influenced so many music genres in the diaspora.
may I be more loving and romantic with myself each day, talk to/about myself with compassion and sweetness, and always believe in myself and my ancestors.
There’s a Black Colombian novela on Youtube called Quibdó Baila. This is the first episode. For context, Quibdó is the capital city of Chocó, a municipality known for its high Afro-Colombian population.
I really don't have the words to express how horrifying it is to go through Motaz's IG stories. esp while knowing Palestinian journalists are showing us a small % of what people are witnessing & experiencing 24/7. May all Palestinian storytellers live to see a free Palestine🕯️
I'm really excited to tune into this podcast. Take a stroll into French Twitter & that will give you a *very small* glimpse into the misogynoir & colorism experienced by dark skinned Black French women. The podcast will be translated into English as well!
this is why I said that wrt mineral labor exploitation in drc we need to be talking about mineral use for military + police technology. this is bigger than phones and vapes.
once you understand the levels to 🇮🇱 surveillance- you will never again believe these are not deliberate, targeted attacks on 🇵🇸 civilians.
once you understand that 🇺🇸 is building, investing in and rolling out the same things...you'll never feel safe here again
Same w/ when people say this about therapists for example. When Black people can and do uphold antiblackness, more Black people in x profession is not *the* solution. People in helping professions being Black won't stop them from participating in antiblack violence.
Siddharth Kara's interest in his unethical work on trafficking came from getting his MBA at Columbia & "becoming increasingly aware of the need for a more analytical finance & economics approach to understanding modern slavery."🚩🚩🚩
If you have any interest in traveling to Colombia in the future, check out

Kinshasa y Barranquilla. Muchos músicos africanos están llegando a la ciudad motivados por el amor que sentimos por sus ritmos y el firme propósito de seguir creando, produciendo y respaldando el talento y el vacile local.
Someone I know was released from immigration detention recently & needs gas money for their job they start tomorrow — Any donations are helpful! CashApp is $keem1114.
Liberalism has people thinking that Siddharth's background in finance & ties to the UN make him a reliable source when they actually prove the opposite. He has no business writing about Congo.
I was going through my files & saw that April 2019, I saved a job posting for the same position I'm starting today, at the same organization. When something is for you, it's really for you.
This video features Tania Duarte Diaz, an Afro-Colombian trans woman who is also an activist and member of
@Caribeafirmativ
, an org that fights for the rights of LGBTQI+ Colombians.
