D. Minn. Judge Menendez says at start of MN v. Noem hearing on legality of ICE operations in Twin Cities that it's a "case of extreme importance to everyone" & yet the only people who can listen live are credentialed media members. Not great cc: @uscourts

Federal agents claimed Alex Pretti forced their hand, alleging he “violently resisted” disarmament until the officers fired “defensive shots.” Bystander footage appears to tell a different story. A frame-by-frame review by @WSJ shows a federal officer pulling a handgun away from

Not soon enough. This "proposed ICE hearing" should be set for MONDAY. Can't drive in? Use the Metro. Can't fly in? IDK, ask Qatar. MONDAY. By Feb. 10 or Mar. 4 or Mar. 18, 75 other things requiring congressional attention will have occurred
Chairman @RepGarbarino has formally requested testimony from ICE, CBP, & USCIS leaders at a full Committee hearing. “Congress has an important responsibility to ensure the safety of law enforcement and the people they serve and protect.” Read more: https://t.co/zEh1urCTfC

Would’ve been nice to hear this but Judge Leon doesn’t allow livestreaming from his courtroom 🙃
JUST IN: Judge Richard Leon (GWBush) sounds skeptical of Trump's power to build WH ballroom w/o Congress' OK. "The '77 Gerald Ford swimming pool? You compare that to ripping down the East Wing & building a new East Wing? C'mon, be serious!" he told DOJ lawyer.

Yesterday at #SCOTUS, @POTUS attorney D. John Sauer spoke over female justices so often Chief Justice Roberts had to intervene.

The Trump administration wants the authority to fire Lisa Cook, a Federal Reserve governor. Experts say that would undermine the independence of the central bank.

Best guess: PACER will be free in 2032. Sorry that it's going to take that long, but we'll get there.
@Thomas_A_Berry When is the PACER system going to be free?!?!?! The system got sued and lost, once! Where are the activists? Where are the public interest lawyers?!

Justice Jackson today bringing attention to the very real issue of printing costs at the Supreme Court. Printing those 40 booklets can easily cost over $1,000, well more than the actual filing fee.

We've previously highlighted the Roundup cases https://t.co/AKM5UqQKpF due to the use of high-low deals on appeal — basically, Monsanto has been caught paying for precedent. Will #SCOTUS address that in the case they just granted? Unclear, but we hope they do (more TK)
BREAKING: The Supreme Court agrees to hear four new cases this term involving questions over Monsanto's liability for Roundup-related illnesses, geofence warrants and patent infringement. #SCOTUS

For all those who've said we can't compel #SCOTUS to take ethics more seriously by using approps to zero out the funding they get for clerks, here's a Rep. Roy amendment that would zero out the money Judges Boasberg & Boardman get for clerks & other staff https://t.co/RO7p6mXJtq.

If there were any remaining doubt whether advisers within the Trump Administration are actively pushing to end the independence of the Federal Reserve, there should now be none. It is now the independence and credibility of the Department of Justice that are in question. I
The Federal Reserve received grand jury subpoenas from the Justice Department on Friday that threaten a criminal indictment relating to Chair Jerome Powell’s testimony last summer about the central bank’s building renovation project Powell statement:

I remain baffled why Justice Alito doesn’t divest his stock holdings that regularly create recusal issues
JUST IN: Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito recuses from a major environmental case due to stock holdings. The dispute, to be argued Monday, asks if Louisiana state courts can oversee suits seeking to hold oil companies liable for pollution from WWII-era oil production. #SCOTUS

I love Alito, but he absolutely needs to liquidate his portfolio. The Court avoids too many economically important cases because he (or his wife) don’t use an index fund. Doesn’t he get to avoid capital gains taxes if he sells to avoid a conflict?
