When interviewed, many of the nation’s top, current/retired, supts indicated that the following were obstacles to their health/well-being: 1) time - not enough of it during the day, 2) personal/professional commitments; & 3) a lack of understanding when it comes to their H & W!

DYK: Your morning routine determines your overall health & well-being for the day. If you feel rushed in the morning, you are more likely to be stressed by the end of the day. On the other hand, if you are in control of your mornings & have an established routine = less stress!

How do the Nation’s Top Supts prioritize stress? When surveyed supts indicated that they recognize stress and address it quickly. They do not allow it to sit unaddressed - because it only grows and begins to consume them personally and professionally! #FITSupts #SuptChat @AASAHQ

Time is rarely on our side. Supts must make time, before they run out of it. Excuses abound, but at the end of the day, Supt’s health and well-being cannot be at the bottom of to-do-list. When H & W are prioritized, miraculously, you find time for other important life things.

DYK: The overwhelming majority of supts spend a lot of time & money on addressing/reacting to their H & W! Supts would save a lot of time & money if they developed a preventive mindset - addressing/prioritizing their H & W before problems happen! Our bodies force us to notice!

What is it really that prevents the overwhelming majority of Americans, including supts, from recognizing the importance of health and well-being, before something bad or tragic happens? Most supts indicate it’s “a matter of too much on their plate - which clouds their focus.”

When supts were asked why health/well-being was always a struggle, the most common response: “there are so many things on my plate, I figure that health/well-being is less of an issue when compared to other things I have to focus on.” Focus & prioritization are issues! #SuptChat

Interesting fact: The problem for supts is not necessarily the actual act of prioritizing health & well-being. The problem: most supts fail to realize that they have a problem with their overall health and well-being and then fail to prioritize their H&W! #FITSupts #SuptChat

Hydrating properly significantly improves mental & physical performance. This is not guesswork. The Galpin Equation = bodyweight in pounds divided by 30 = the number of ounces of water to ingest per 15 min of exertion. (On average, not necessarily on the 1/4 hour). @DrAndyGalpin

53 today. Time goes by so fast. Still able to get a respectable score in my boxing class. Thanks to all the great instructors at TNT boxing in Missoula! You are amazing.

Supts often look at themselves externally in terms of health/well-being. However, the internal things are leading to the poor health and well-being for supts. Hypertension, cholesterol, stress/anxiety, joint/bone issues, mental exhaustion, etc. #FITSupts #Suptchat #edchat #AASA

The Headlines aren’t getting better when it comes to the health/well-being of superintendents. Poor health/well-being unfortunately doesn’t discriminate -no matter race, gender, or geographic location. An overwhelming majority of the nation’s supts are struggling! #FITSupts #AASA

How do Supts go about changing/improving their health/well-being? The answer is simple, yet also complicated. Some of the leading physicians say: take your health/well-being one day at a time, start small, & never measure progress daily, but each month/qtr/season/annually. #Supts

DYK: 3 out of 10 supts indicate that they suffer from chronic, & sometimes, debilitating anxiety. Their anxiety happens often & sometimes w/out any reason.Physicians encourage supts to exercise regularly, maintain a healthy diet, avoid alcohol, smoking, & truly use days off!
