When interviewed, many of the nation’s top, current/retired, supts indicated that the following were obstacles to their health/well-being: 1) time - not enough of it during the day, 2) personal/professional commitments; & 3) a lack of understanding when it comes to their H & W!

DYK: Your morning routine determines your overall health & well-being for the day. If you feel rushed in the morning, you are more likely to be stressed by the end of the day. On the other hand, if you are in control of your mornings & have an established routine = less stress!

Time is rarely on our side. Supts must make time, before they run out of it. Excuses abound, but at the end of the day, Supt’s health and well-being cannot be at the bottom of to-do-list. When H & W are prioritized, miraculously, you find time for other important life things.

DYK: The overwhelming majority of supts spend a lot of time & money on addressing/reacting to their H & W! Supts would save a lot of time & money if they developed a preventive mindset - addressing/prioritizing their H & W before problems happen! Our bodies force us to notice!

What is it really that prevents the overwhelming majority of Americans, including supts, from recognizing the importance of health and well-being, before something bad or tragic happens? Most supts indicate it’s “a matter of too much on their plate - which clouds their focus.”

When supts were asked why health/well-being was always a struggle, the most common response: “there are so many things on my plate, I figure that health/well-being is less of an issue when compared to other things I have to focus on.” Focus & prioritization are issues! #SuptChat

Hydrating properly significantly improves mental & physical performance. This is not guesswork. The Galpin Equation = bodyweight in pounds divided by 30 = the number of ounces of water to ingest per 15 min of exertion. (On average, not necessarily on the 1/4 hour). @DrAndyGalpin

How do Supts go about changing/improving their health/well-being? The answer is simple, yet also complicated. Some of the leading physicians say: take your health/well-being one day at a time, start small, & never measure progress daily, but each month/qtr/season/annually. #Supts

DYK: 3 out of 10 supts indicate that they suffer from chronic, & sometimes, debilitating anxiety. Their anxiety happens often & sometimes w/out any reason.Physicians encourage supts to exercise regularly, maintain a healthy diet, avoid alcohol, smoking, & truly use days off!
