It is with deep sadness that we share that Chief Ron Coleman has passed away. Chief Coleman was one of the original founders of the National Fire Heritage Center and was also a member of the Hall of Legends, Legacies and Leaders which he certainly represented well.

Tuesday Apparatus Showcase: The Toledo Fire Dept. purchased this Champion water tower in 1897. In 1915 a Christie Tractor was added, and it stayed in service until 1950. Water towers lacked hydraulics which made them difficult to raise and maneuver. Photo from Hall of Flame.

Station Saturday: Engine Company 31 FDNY. Firehouse, Engine Company 31 is located at 87 Lafayette Street in the Civic Center neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City. It was built in 1895 and was utilized until 1972 it was then added to the National Register of Historic Places.

Friday Flashback: On July 29, 1956, a leak at the McKee Refinery in Sunray, TX, resulted in a massive fire and resulting BLEVE. 16 firefighters died at the scene and 3 more later from burns, and an additional 32 people were injured.

Wednesday Book Shelf: Frank Brannigan was compelled to write the most comprehensive building construction text for the fire service in 1971. His purpose was to save firefighters lives using his knowledge and experiences. It is now in its 6th edition. https://t.co/TCdB2iObyl

Tuesday Apparatus Showcase: FDNY Engine 71. The "War Wagon" utilized this 1947 Mack 750 gpm pumper #1148 received on May 4, 1951, and operated it until 1958.

Station Saturdays: Engine House #1, Memphis, TN. This station was constructed in 1910 and is currently home to the Fire Museum of Memphis. The history of the dept. dates back to 1846 when the first independent fire company was formed.

Friday Flashback: The Hartford Circus Fire. The fire occurred on July 6, 1944, in Hartford, CT. The tent fire broke out during an afternoon performance of the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus. The fire killed at least 167 people, and more than 700 were injured.

Dennis Smith first published this in 1972 and it soon became the catalyst for many joining the fire service. It wax his first hand account of being on the job in the FDNY.
