No data is perfect. But across schools, Scouts, and Catholic studies, LDS prevalence is consistently lower. That doesn’t excuse a single case—one is too many. But the evidence suggests LDS safeguards reduce risk better than many peers. 9/9.

Survivor hotlines in medicine, counseling, and social work also keep records private. LDS is no different. Privacy in these systems protects children and victims. Critics see secrecy as suspicious, but it’s actually aligned with best practice. 8/9.

The hotline doesn’t release call data—and that’s standard in abuse prevention. Confidentiality shields victims from exposure, retrauma, or outing—not abusers. Keeping details private is a victim-centered best practice, not evidence of cover-up. 7/9.

Mandatory reporting is complex. HHS (2019) found some victims don’t disclose if they know it triggers an automatic report. Other studies say it boosts detection. Critics cite the latter, but the tradeoff is real. 6/9.

Underreporting is a problem: a 2020 study estimated only 5–10% of religious abuse cases surface. Even if LDS numbers were undercounted several times over, they’d still likely remain below school or Catholic figures. 5/9.

Catholic data adds context: ~0.4% of members abused (2024 study) vs LDS ~0.07% (FLOODLIT). Both likely underreported, but LDS consistently shows lower prevalence. 4/9.

In Scouts, LDS units were ~20–30% of troops but only ~5% of abuse cases (per BSA files, 2023 analysis). Way below proportional share. LDS policies to protect kids seem to have reduced risk, even if headlines from settlements suggest otherwise. 3/9.

FLOODLIT lists ~4,300 LDS abuse allegations over decades (~0.07% vs 6M U.S. members). By contrast, a 2004 U.S. DOE study found ~9.6% of students report sexual misconduct by school staff. Definitions differ, but LDS numbers look far lower. 2/9.

Critics say the LDS abuse hotline shields the Church, not kids. I understand the concern. What I’ve seen is the opposite: it connects leaders to real help. Data is scarce + underreporting is real, but what we do know suggests LDS abuse rates are lower than peers. 🧵 1/9.
