I have to admit I have become a bigger fan of
@mammukka
recently than I used to be before. What amazes me is his consistency as a performer across these 35-40 years and an undying passion to keep improvising
How Mammootty found ways to remain consistent over years-A long
#Thread
Mammotty portrayed these four characters with different dimensions and with sheer brilliance - all in the span of 13 months.
This is UNREAL filmography !
Does
#Vikram
have the finest last 6 minutes ever of a Tamil big star movie ? Looking at how
@Dir_Lokesh
packed 6 brilliant moments in these 6 minutes.

( Spoilers ahead)
I still think about how KS Ravikumar gave Tamil Cinema its greatest mass film (Padayappa) and greatest comedy film (Panchathanthiram) in the gap of just 2 years.
**Climax Spoiler**
#NanpakalNerathuMayakkam
Sundaram didnt change to James. He just speaks two Malayalam words-" Vaa pokaam" & walks away because Sundaram realizes no one in village wants him. From bus,he keeps looking at his village in last frame. Sundaram's dog follows him too
Best actor, Child artist, Film, Director, Tamil film, Music , Cinematography - There were so many categories where it had a great chance. But how Peranbu was robbed of everything remains one of National Award history's biggest snubs.
Two films in which the protagonist feel he is helpless and isolated from others. 36 years gap between them. One phenomenal actor whose acting skills is as brilliant in the second film as it was in the first
In all probability, we may not see an actor like this again.
@mammukka
"You have to play a police officer who rarely use gun. You have to show you were devising this plan all the while to trap the culprits. You have to show how determined and desperate you are to catch the two main culprits"
Mammootty-"Yes"
What an actor. What a scene. What a film
Vijay is a massive superstar who can make elevation scenes look lot better than it is in screenplay
But what sets him apart from other stars is his stunt skills. Not only stunts look completely genuine, they are absolute treat to eyes. And no better example than this from Kaththi
For me Vikram >Kaithi >Leo> Master
Biggest plus - The Cafe action sequence. Havent seen an action scene this tensely and superbly done in recent times with a brilliant Vijay and Sandy in center of it.
Biggest Minus - Flashback. This is shocking writing from Lokesh
2024 is
40 yrs of Adiyozhukkukal
35 yrs of Vadakkan Veeragadha
30 yrs of Vidheyan
25 yrs of Ambedkar
20 yrs of Kaazcha
15 yrs of Palerimanikyam
10 yrs of Munnariyippu
5 yrs of Peranbu
2 weeks of Bramayugam
You can look this happy when you have had such a glorious career.
Dhanush played a ruthless gangster at the age of 23 in Pudhupettai. He played a reserved young man with food delivery job at the age of 39 in Thiruchitrambalam.
His ability and range to play any age character at any age of his career is what amazes me always
20 min buildup in screenplay where hero and villain plays smart cat mouse game is what makes this one of the greatest mass scenes ever made .
And when Vijay comes out of the smoke with Harris Jayaraj's BGM opening at that right moment, you have an iconic hero elevation moment.
Year is 2014
Kathiresan arrives at the old age home to see the old men are attacked
While he tries to help them, a goon keeps his hand on his shoulder.
Anirudh now plays arguably his career best BGM
Crowd in theater:
Neru trailer wins when Siddique tells Mohanlal- "You keep queit" & Mohanlal looks down helplessly. This setback, this vulnerability, this ability to feel for the character-This has been missing in Mohanlal films for a while
Jeethu Joseph might just bring back the actor. Once again
Anirudh swiftly switching between two terrific BGMs, the title cards appearing in between, the way Vijay moves in front of the bus - this is such a well edited scene
Master sitting below Varisu and Bigil in all time grossers is a misfortune.
So Gold will also release without much clue on what the film is about? I love this technique of Alphonse Puthren in hiding the content of film and not giving trailers. When watching Premam first day,I didnt know if there was third phase of George waiting or what he'd become there

"My life is in this town
& I aint going down
You think that I am crazy
But I dont want the crown
I am just an ordinary person"
Its amazing how Lokesh wraps up the full essence of
#Leo
in these lyrics in the start itself.Leo is growing on me as I think more about it
This is a pic when Tovino was out during flood relief work in year 2018. Its perhaps fitting that Tovino gets the best goosebump evoking scenes in
#2018Movie
.
When Tovino gets a little surprised to see his villagers clapping to his efforts is a wonderfully acted scene
Amidst issues I have with Leo, I have to say these two sequences were very well written by Lokesh and Vijay gave two of his finest performing scenes from his career here. Its these two scenes that help me rate Leo above Master.
Dhanush vs Vikram is a good case study on how to use your enormous talent(Both have National awards)
Dhanush mixes up smartly teaming up with Mari Selvaraj, Vetrimaran and choosing light hearted winners like VIP & Thiruchitrambalam. Vikram has never really took off after Anniyan
This was a surprise no one saw coming. This Onam might have seen rise of a star who can dance very well, perform stunts brilliantly, carry his charm through a film & shoulder an action film as lead actor. That is Shane Nigam
Shane Nigam is brilliant in
#RDX
& film is paisa vasool
#Varshangalkushesham
is Vineeth Sreenivaaan's career best. Friendship between two men who dreamt to be in Cinema has been so wholesomely portrayed. Dhyan is beautifully restrained while Pranav-I cant stress enough-is a real surprise
And yes I have another tweet for Nivin Pauly!
Now if all this is not enough, you have another surprise that Vikram was all this time in middle of the men when Rolex had arrived and announced a bounty for the person who could bring Vikram's head to him.
This has to be the finest closing shot ever in a Tamil film !
This might be an unpopular opinion. But I found
#Viswasam
as
#Ajith
's one pleasing movie since Mankatha. It is not as an action movie that it worked for me, but as a nice father-daughter tale. (1)

Prithviraj's Najeeb is not just mindblowing. It might rank among the 25 or 30 greatest performances ever in Malayalam.
The scene where he looks himself in the piece of mirror and says- "Ente Umma... Eniku vayya" is not gonna leave me for long
Anjali Menon once said- "Mammootty did Vidheyan & Ponthanmada in same year. That's a difficult thing to do"
Mammootty's greatness is not just that he did it in 1994. With Bheeshmaparvam, Rorschach & now good reviews for
#NanpakalNerathuMayakkam
,he continues to do that in 2022!
Still cant get over how good Mammootty is in
#KannurSquad
. When he senses something is behind his back, when he really cant let go of the guy from village, when he is desperate to get more from culprits
Has there ever been a better actor playing investigative officer on screen?

#Bramayugam
. A wonderfully set eerie atmosphere.Brilliant art direction.Sidharth Bharathan who is relevation & then Mammootty!
At this point,I have run out of adjectives & words for Mammootty. This ladies & gentlemen is in all probability a never before never after actor
It would be interesting to see in few years how Naslen could become a strong lead actor in comedy genre and fill a huge gap that is present now in Malayalam in this genre.
I miss
@NivinOfficial
being part of such movies. He had such control over this romcom/light hearted genre. What is in general with the low profile Nivin is maintaining these days !
#AaveshamonPrime
#Aavesham
For people who felt for Ranga here, Aavesham will always remain one hell of a film and Ranga will be an iconic character they will always cherish in their heart
For others, film might be only watchable experience with good interval and decent climax
Thanks Sangeeth Sivan for giving one of the biggest scale entertaining films ever made in Malayalam Cinema. Sorry that we weren't kind enough to make it one of our biggest blockbusters of all time - a boxoffice status that it deserved
Like Yodha, we had only Yodha
Rest in Peace
Mammootty won his first state award in 1984. He has won his sixth state award in 2022. That is a period of 38 years of being brilliant in one's profession. No other actor in the history of Malayalam Cinema has so many years of gap between their any two state awards.
Agree, just the anticipation of hero is about to arrive few moments later, and how the BGM does the rest of the trick here is amazing.
Anirudh-Vijay has to be the greatest music director-superstar combo when it comes to mass elevation moments in Tamil.
These are Fahadh Faasil's last 5 films. He has mixed it up with challenging roles, great performances or pushing his market further in other languages(Tamil, Telugu) - in a way you dont notice that he has achieved it all.
Happy Birthday to an enormous talent who turns 40 today.
Rewatching Thiruchitrambalam. This has to be Dhanush's best film. The warm hug that this film is ! A wonderful script that gives closure to all the well written characters in it
"So in last 2 years, you have made boxoffice return with Bheeshmaparvam, given a great performance in Rorschach and won your 6th state award for Nanpakal Nerathu Mayakkam. Now maybe you have given them everything you can as you turn 72 today"
Mammootty-"Not everything. Not yet"
John Abhraham's smirk, Shahrukh Khan smiling despite knowing he's tricked , Deepika rising from water cutting across John in the frame, John then walking in slow motion to SRK
The entire orchestration of this scene !
#Pathaan
may have a routine screenplay but it was so well made
The control in madness in Sadayam and Aham. The act as blind in Yodha. The ruthlessness in Adwaitham.
Mohanlal did all this in 1992 and didnt win state award. Only reason jury could have had is he just won one already the previous year for Bharatham ?!
No one does the "I am not who you think I am" transformation scenes on screen better than Mohanlal
Can he do one in real life at this point in his career now?
Still feel Leo will age well with time. Vijay, Lokesh and Anirudh setup two of Tamil's greatest action scenes in first half- with the beauty in writing that the hero turns to violence only as last resort and when there is really no other way to get out of it.

@actorvijay
Rajamanikyam is imo Mammootty's career best work. To switch between mass to comedy to emotional within seconds was made look so easy. Years later I saw a performance in same lines.
"Reintroducing FaFa" - A promotion tagline that was completely justified.
Eda mwone!
#Aavesham
Yesterday's Hindi
#VikramVedha
teaser reminded me with how much ease Vijay Sethupathi played the character in the original. Look at the different roles he played during 2015-2019 !
Taking up villain roles in superstar movies tied up a very fine actor we had once.
Still reeling from how beautiful
#KathalTheCore
was. The last 20 minutes- with scenes between Mathew & his father and Mathew & Omana- is especially too good ! The writing, direction and acting all done with such sensitivity. Special mention to Jyothika's brilliant performance
As we are talking about survival thrillers, remembering how Neerali had all the potential to be a classic surival thriller in Malayalam....
.... if Mohanlal had survived this film and escaped the sets during the first few days of shooting.
Mohanlal is at his hilarious and energetic best through Kilukkam. But in the last 20 min, he becomes so restrained, beautifully portraying a man who decides to keep his love to himself. And at that point you knew Kilukkam was gonna be a masterpiece.
0:05 - The frame where the bad guy falls down and Vijay rises up at exact same time- This is how you direct a peak hero elevation moment.
Oh I cant stop talking about what a clever filmmaker Lokesh is.
3 years of John durairaj the alcoholic professor, one of my favourite character of thalapathy 🍻 the first movie released in theatres during pandemic and this interval is out of the box 🤌🏻🥵🔥

When Malayalam Cinema did bang bang bang in thriller genre in 4 months gap each in one year. Not another Malayalam film matched upto these in this genre after!
"Why did she fall in love with a normal soldier?"
"Because he is.. Ram"
#SitaRamam
was adorable and so was Ram's characterisation. Top Notch work by Dulquer so much that this film wouldn't have been this effective with another actor. The last few minutes of the film is so good!
Saw a FB post of Shobhana's age when she debuted & I realized her age doing these films
14 yrs in Kanamarayathu
15 yrs in Yathra
16 yrs in TP Balagopalan
17 yrs in Naadodikattu
18 yrs in Vellanakalude Naadu
20 yrs in Innale
23 yrs with National award for Manichitrathazhu
Wow!
And then you have the big big cameo of Suriya playing Rolex. Imagine if this had remained a suspense until the FDFS !
Its interesting how did Lokesh decide on Suriya to play this role ? But a knockout decision nevertheless !
Kakka Kakka ( police officer 's wife dies at the end)
Vettaiyaadu velaiyaadu ( He marries again)
Yennai Arindhaal( His wife leaves him behind with a daughter whom he raises on his own)
*Spoiler alert*
I am late to notice this. But during portion -"Abhiraamiye thalattum" is when Kamal lifts Roshini in Guna song. That is exact point when Jean Paul lifts Sreenath Bhasi too in

Nivin's comic timing is gold level good. 5 years after LAD, I saw that livening up a theater. Every single line delivered by Nivin in
#Varshangalkushesham
is a banger and special credit to Vineeth for that
Ladies and gentlemen- He is back. These two scenes are absolute rocking!
The set of scenes before this which leads to here. The staging. The execution. The way of introducing a superstar in a frame. The Superstar who is in great form. The superb BGM that starts at exact point. The applause that was in theaters
This frame from
#Bheeshmaparvam

@mammukka
Not just the casting, what fantastic use of that cast. Even in such a big cast, Mammooty getting one of his finest written characters ever. A fabulous actor like Raghuvaran shines in a small but lovely role. And then there is also Tabu !
This continues to be a gem of a film.
One of the finest performances I have seen portraying pain on screen. The performance that made me perhaps a bigger fan of the actor than I was before. I still think about how Vicky Kaushal in Uri won the National award over this act.
Today -
#3YearsOfPeranbu
@mammukka
A Tamil superstar mass moment hasnt been staged, executed, acted & given BGM to in this way afterwards (Vikram climax came close)
To follow this action block after Kathiresan hears the flashback of Jeevanandam and farmers is exceptional screenplay writing for a superstar film.
As

gave one of the most beautiful scenes I have ever seen.
Like KPAC Lalitha, we had only KPAC Lalitha.
"With high quality images, 4k resolution etc on screen, you dont need loud or expressive acting like 80s and 90s. Even your subtle changes on face gets noticed by viewers & that is why I changed my style of acting too"
An interesting POV I noted from Mammootty's interviews today
#1yearofLucifer
Main reasons behind Lucifer's great repeat value is its superior picturization quality , the perfection
@PrithviOfficial
achieved behind most of his frames and detailing that you notice in subsequent viewings. Few of my fav frames from movie.

@Mohanlal
Didn't like
#Kantara
as a whole. But yea, Rishabh Shetty's performance in last 10 minutes is definitely National award worthy, and I did end up watching that portion alone a couple of times. Another instance of how a brilliant last 10 minutes can change a film's destiny.
So from this playing XI, only Kohli, Pandya, SKY and Arshdeep looks good to play 2024 T20 WC
Hope Rohit Sharma steps down as T20 captain & concentrate only in Tests & ODI. Rahul's future should be evaluated.I hope selectors finally look upto Sanju Samson as wicket keeper batsman
Each time I watch a recent Malayalam big scale film, I end up appreciating Lucifer and Prithviraj's handling of full product even more. A rare instance where almost every department in film worked. IMO Malayalam's best mass movie in last 17 years (since Rajamanikyam in 2005)
There is lots to laugh in
#Premalu
with Naslen's ability to deliver joke after joke with a straight face in full flow.He shares great chemistry with Mamita who excels towards films last scenes
