You always knew Marz was destined to lead people. From your earliest playground days, she was the one who took charge, who kept things organized and fair. Charismatic and fearless, she was the one the other kids looked up to.
It's Vertumnalia fest! We're celebrating Exocolonist's one year anniversary with a month of fanart, fic, and feast! Show off your talents on the Finji Discord and post questions for the developer Q&A and art stream on August 25th at 12pm PT / 3pm ET.
Who Dys? It's Dys!
We pronounce his name "diss" as in "dystopian", "dysphoric" or his full name "Dysthymia".
He doesn't care though, you can pronounce it however you want. Whatever. Names are just dumb human constructs anyway.
It takes a heavy step forward, then another. It moves gently, its feet sinking into the soft ground and pushing up phosphorescent fungi from below to explode to the surface in rings of jubilant light.

✨Part 2: investigate a crime as 17-year-old amateur detective Solanaceae:
It's Glow season, and out in the jungle, something new is taking place. The plants are flowering - glowing, iridescent blooms - and everything is full of life. There are strange new sounds; long hooting calls and gurgling roars.
Nougat's the youngest pictured character in I Was a Teenage Exocolonist.
@bkomei
convinced me we needed to see her grow up and I'm so glad they did!
T-t-tail!! 🐈
In Exocolonist, you were born on the colony ship Stratospheric.
You've never seen Earth except in old holovids, but you've lived your whole young life so far dreaming of the day you'll land on Vertumna.
"It's my new holoeye implant," Tang says. "But I seem to be experiencing some unpleasant side effects from it. Instance warned me that this level of visual information can be difficult for the human brain to comprehend, at first."
Uncle Tonin, Tammy's dad, bars the way outside the colony until you can prove you're tough (Toughness skill 20) or brave (Bravery skill 20) enough to handle it out there.
It's that time of year! Vote in the PLAY Game Of The Year 2022 awards to help decide this year's Top 10. The ranked winners will make it into the magazine. With three votes per person, it's time to represent your favourite nominees:
One of the most powerful cards in Exocolonist, the strength of Tammy's love and support will multiply the card to the right by x2. This also doubles other effects that increase the value of that card.
"So you're my hunting partner? I guess we'll make the best of it," Vace says. "I'm more of a lone wolf... but you're lucky. You're going to learn so much from me."
Forget a birthday or somebody's favorite gift? It's all in the Friends menu, and once you learn a fact about someone in one life, it will be there waiting for you during your next life.
Most characters hide inside the ship during Glow season. It's dangerous out there!
But Dys has no fear (literally) so you'll find him outside at all times of year. He loves Glow, because everybody stays inside and leaves him alone.
Your mother shows her (tough) love by encouraging you to try hard and improve yourself. Her card increases the reward for winning any card game, giving you an extra stat every month if you do well.
The more times you play Exocolonist, the more memories from your past lives will reappear through your dreams. Some mysteries may take many lives to unravel.
There are a few ways to upgrade cards as you grow up. Marz's card will upgrade as you get to know her better. Her card is very powerful, but it costs Kudos (the game's currency) to use... until you reach the final upgrade, then her card pays YOU instead.
"Hoo-hoo!" Professor Hal laughs sheepishly, coming in to find you playing with the now-obedient little bot. "This one got away from me again! It's always busting out of the robotics lab. How'd you manage to catch it?"
The hallway stretches... stretches... and you're stretching too, your arms impossibly long. Your head feels like it's slowly filling up like a balloon and contracting down to the size of an atom at the same time.
Is this the wormhole?

Look up... waaaaay up! It's a flock of floatcows bobbing by, following the wind to pinker pastures in the valley of vertigo. When it's time to descend, they just let one rip. 💨
Your starting cards are very weak, but can still be matched with neighboring cards for bonuses (including pairs of 0's or straights of 0-1-2). Later you can upgrade these basic memory cards in the Gym.
One of the weirdest and possibly most powerful cards in the game, the fidget spinner. With this gear equipped, every blue card counts as every number to make powerful straights and pairs.
Two days until I Was a Teenage Exocolonist launches! 🚀🚀
Some collectibles have no use except to be given as gifts. Every character has gifts they like and ones they don't, but this unique flower from Earth is one anyone would love to receive.
Geranium (your dad) is curious about the native plants on Vertumna and whether they can be combined with seeds you brought from Earth to made hardier variants. The other geoponics engineers are more skeptical - what if something goes wrong?
Anemone (I call her "Nemmie") has protective blue scales that grow in like scabs over broken or irritated skin. They itch at first, which she hates, but result in some very cool scars, and she'll never get hurt in the same place twice.
"Two giant frog eyes and two regular ones, long forked tails, and one strong foot for hopping... these must be hopeyes!"

The endlessly friendly Rex likes cuddles, construction, and the occasional game of fetch. He's always looking for sticks to help him build his dream project.
There are four kinds of pets to collect in Exocolonist, and they each grant different buffs. The Hopeye and Vriki here are the most common, and the least, uh, horribly dangerous ones.
Sol: How fast can you run?
Utopia: As fast as a leopard.
Sol: How fast are you going to run?
Utopia: Run? Sugar, I'm gonna fly.
Because, uh, cat feet. And gliders.
Dys surveying the pollen-filled Valley of Vertigo. The thick clouds of fungal spores aren't the only danger out there, so it's best to explore with a buddy!
Chief Administrator Seeq is an underrated adult. They're fussy and uptight, sure, but look at that outfit! That cool high double collar! Those dangly rope bits laced around the bottom! Fashion!
Your body aches and your eyes burn from the smoke. A figure appears through the flames. It's your... friend?
Wait... why can't you remember her name? She's gesturing and shouting at you, but all you hear is a ringing in your ears.

Dys spits his first sip halfway across the bar. "What the hell, is that hot sauce?"
Tang makes a face. "And a raw egg? Are you trying to poison us?"

Vertumna is a dangerous planet, and not everyone will survive it. If only you knew, you could have been there at the right time to save them. What if there was a way to go back and try again?

Looking back on those first days after planetfall, everything seemed so innocent and easy. It's hard to believe how much things have changed since then, and how much you and Anemone have too.
"Rex has nanoprinted a guitar, and bows deeply to Marz before taking the stage. "I dedicate my performance to your beauty, m'lady," he says, and Marz giggles."

Cal's mom Tirah by
@bkomei
. She's a life support engineer, which on Vertumna I guess is somewhere between an electrician and a doctor.
I'd kind of written her out of the game in favor of the more dour Doctor Instance, but Tirah is back and now with art!
Being too stressed out means you can't explore or do most jobs until you spend a month relaxing.
Your dad and Cal here are two of the chillest fellas in the colony, and they never seem to let the stress get to them. What's their secret??
The "playing sportsball" card sets the cards on the left and right to the same value it is. Don't knock it - this always makes a three-of-a-kind worth 4 bonus points! And if you can make it bigger, the other cards get bigger too...

, the children's creche. There's a hidden boob in the scene, CAN YOU FIND IT?
And don't worry Tammy is fine, she just has a paper cut.
A lone bounceweasel surveys the expansion of the human colony. It screeches its annoyance. Or maybe that's a screech of jubilation? Who can tell.

Cards of the right color often get a boost in challenges of that suit, so you want more red physical cards if you're doing a lot of physical challenges.
Wildcards are the exception - they're every color and get all the bonuses... unless they're Unchangeable.
There are five different regions to unlock in I Was a Teenage Exocolonist. The Western Wresting Ridge is the strangest, with unexplained phenomena that don't quite seem... natural.

Dys's expedition gear protects him from the dangers of the Vertumnan wilds. From aggressive xeno to poison gas clouds to anomalies where the laws of physics might get a little wobbly, he's prepared.
"Oh, I'm hopeless at this!" Nomi exclaims, tugging on the ends of their hair. "I didn't know there was gonna be so much math in engineering!"
