I helped SoundCloud move the vast majority of our backend to the JVM also due to maintainability and scaling issues. Rails never went away, but that was not by choice but rather a compromise. Rails is great for many things but requires employing a lot of dedicated people to scale.

It is very personally weird for Twitter (a place I used to work) to be adopting the cryptic, unintuitive name of @Theteamatx (another place I used to work). “I work at X” is a statement that never stops feeling awkward and invariably requires further explanation.
