FWIW, I was always a fan of an idea we called "Commercial Accounts" internally—which was to charge businesses for Twitter use. Features would include verification, stats, and profile customization. Someone smart put this deck together in Q209 but...priorities.

Why I like 280-characters, in theory: Most tweets will not get longer, just because they can (or they'd all be maxed out today). Sure, some will get a bit lanky, due to laziness. But that's a small cost for more expression and utility.

That’s just me. I read Twitter a lot (have to put that caveat in there, so there’s not a “Twitter cofounder doesn’t use Twitter anymore” story). But I always preferred to think of it as an information network, rather than a social network. I realize of course that it is both.
