Detention conditions litigation does not directly curb ICE enforcement, but it can pose important restrictions on ICE's capacity to arrest immigrants.

A word about @eunicehcho. She came to my office when she was a student at Stanford Law School and I had a fellowship there to ask if she could support my research and learn from me—without requesting any pay or credit….

The Trump administration wants to aggressively expand detention capacity to 100K people per day, with fat Congressional approps. Detainees report that conditions in detention continue to deteriorate. At least 5 people in ICE detention have died since Trump entered office. /9

What does this all mean to people in detention? DHS says that it will work to establish “performance measures” and “strengthen its process.” But let’s not be fooled that any of this will mean any improvements for detained immigrants. /8

Tell that, of course, to the families of people who have died in ICE custody—as we found, 95% of these deaths were likely preventable if adequate care had been provided. https://t.co/cBRUhTlFfx. /4

ICE Health Service Corps inspectors found that facilities frequently failed to meet staffing and care requirements , and had deficiencies in providing chronic care and suicide watch—but found the majority of facilities to be “100% compliant” with ICE medical standards. /3

For example, in 2023, Office of Detention Oversight identified 120 areas of concern regarding sexual abuse and assault in ICE detention, but did not require resolution of these concerns because “they are not among the detention standards the facilities are required to follow.”/2

Thread: ICE detention oversight. The GAO issued a new report on oversight and inspections of ICE detention facilities. https://t.co/2IG0iwK0gY.... It confirms what we've said for years: DHS has failed to conduct effective oversight of conditions in ICE detention facilities. 1/

News: The U.S. military will be allowing ICE to use the Buckley Space Force Base in Aurora, Colorado to detain unauthorized migrants arrested by federal deportation officers. A DOD spokesperson tells @ellee_watson it will be used for "criminal aliens" arrested in Colorado.
