During Mass I prayed for the people of St Michael’s Stockwell, among them our newly weds L & B, and all the priests and people of @SouthwarkCofE. I also.prayed and gave thanks for Bishop @MartinGainsbor1 ‘s victory over the Pennine Way and for Matabeleland

Lisbon 2025 Day 4 St George’s Anglican Church. I went for Mass & to say hello to the chaplain. I found a large, diverse, friendly congregation celebrating India & Pakistan, the culture of some of their regulars, I also found Fr Louis Darrent, also visiting. A lovely surprise.

August 2025 Lisbon Day 4: St George’s Anglican Church. But I’m an hour early for Mass! I misread the time. The Eucharist starts at 11.30am not 10 30. But the British Cemetery is a shady, beautiful place to sit and wait. Henry Fielding is buried here.

Splashing out on the €18 hotel breakfast as the wedding banquet is at 6pm. Doing so in clericals is attracting stares from other guests and beams of delight from the Portuguese, Brazilian and Angolan all female staff. But I have no intention of letting down the C of E side.

August 2025 Lisbon Day 3: Up early for The Big Day! In reality a Common Worship Blessing of a Marriage service as in Portugal, like all of Europe, you need a civil registration first. But they’re my parishioners, I have full episcopal permissions and for L & B it is The Big Day.

Exciting. I’ve booked my day small group tour Lisbon to Sintra. Great reviews on Tripadvisor and a discount price of $90 (£67). They do everything and even pick me up and drop me off at my hotel. It’s my last full day here and it will be an adventure. Hope the company is good.

August 2025 Lisbon Day 2: after walking 14,000 steps in 6 hours despite much use of bus, ferry, lift and ice cream, I have had quite enough. Fantastic day. Lisbon South Bank stroll is possibly scary. No barriers to speak of for 1,5 km and very windy.

Here’s a life lesson for you: South Lisbon has a fancy elevator down a cliff to 2 seafood restaurants. Yellow tables as featured on Netflix Somebody Feed Phil has a 2 hour queue. Turquoise tables where I am right next door, has the same view and tables in the shade.

August 2025 holiday Lisbon Day 2: South of the river here is just like London -no tourists. Where normal people live, great street art and great local restaurants. I feel right at home. This would be my house, with Our Lady.

August 2025 holiday Lisbon Day 2: Cristo Rei statue - even with the bus across the bridge it’s still a lot of walking. 4,000 steps all uphill. But it is so worth it when you get here.

I know, I know. But I don’t care. The hotel breakfast is €18. This cost me €4.95. I may be Lady Erica in the evenings here but I’ll still be just a vicar when I get home.
