United Firefighters of Los Angeles City strongly oppose the termination of @LAFD Fire Chief Crowley. Chief Crowley is a strong leader who has the respect of our firefighters and wasn’t afraid to tell the truth. She’s being made a scapegoat from a devastating fire without the

It was so much fun talking with @DesignsafeR last week about our wildfire research. Thank you for the invitation to chat about wildfires. @EngineeringOSU
For urban areas, engineers design to mitigate wildfire damage. It begins w/field reconnaissance. Research engineer @erica_fischer explains in this DesignSafe Radio podcast episode: https://t.co/Vj0MiEGB3h

Timely throwback to the work we did in fall 2023 with @bpwham and @FSRI_org. We found negative pressure during wildfires due to large demands on the water system can cause significant amounts of ash and soot to be sucked into water distribution systems. Stay tuned for the paper!
Round #2 here we go. This week @bpwham and I are collaborating with @FSRI_org to understand how depressurization of water systems during a WUI fire can potentially lead to water contamination within the water distribution system. Research funded by @SloanFoundation.

Can homes be 100% fireproof? It depends on what you mean by fireproof and what the fire demand is on the structure! I spoke with AirTalk answering listener questions about fire safe building construction practices. @EngineeringOSU

Question: As of today, what water systems have issued drinking water use warnings in the #LosAngelesFire area? Answer: Many are small, a few are large. Some are public entities; some are private companies. Some have only portions of their systems impacted, others have their

Wind-driven fires such as those that we saw this week around LA overwhelm fire suppression capabilities all the time. This occurred during many previous fires, including throughout the state of Oregon in 2020, causing depressurization of the water systems.
Water experts dismissed Donald Trump’s claims that California's water policy is to blame for dry hydrants. But Los Angeles is also unprepared for the age of urban wildfires.

Unsafe drinking water alerts coming out of areas impacted by the LA fires. Reports of lack of access to water from firefighters could mean system depressurization sucking in ash and soot from the fire itself to the water system.

Loss of access to water occurs after many fires because the fire is overloading fire suppression capabilities and causing depressurization of the system. This will result in water contamination post-fire. https://t.co/2PJZfYYJoY
