Hello friends, I don't post here. If you'd like to hear about research updates and musings on bagworms I'll be posting them to the other place. Random life photos on 📸, at ethanbeaver, and i also rate pigeons and doves at yours_pigeon. Hello and goodbye 👋

How did everyone spend their New Year? For me, I spent 5 hours on top of a cliff near Palm Beach under a single mistletoe waiting for this little brown butterfly. It’s Ogyris abrota, the Dark Purple Azure. All Ogyris are hard to find and harder to photograph so it was worth it!

They are among the most threatened butterfly species in Australia. The paper is also available open access from Invertebrate Systematics here -

This butterfly is setting our hearts aflutter. 🦋 Working with @ourANU, our Australian National Insect Collection researchers have described a new butterfly – Ogyris caelestia or the sapphire azure butterfly. 📷 | Ethan Beaver & Michael Braby 🔗 https://t.co/yQTUReTn4I

We saw so many Rippon’s Birdwing butterflies in Sulawesi but as always they were constantly flying. Nearly all my photographs of this species were taken on the wing.

The paper, which is the first half of my honours thesis, is an integrated systematic revision of five related butterflies. In addition to the revision, I present the complete life histories, biology and ecology of all members of the group, and clarify historical literature. 3/4

The new species, Ogyris caelestia, is endemic to south-central Queensland. Their caterpillars feed on mistletoe plants, and have an obligate relationship with the arboreal ant Anonychomyrma inclinata. The butterfly is of conservation concern and known from only three sites. 2/4

After ~7 yr of work, it's finally out! We present a molecular phylogeny of butterflies sampling >90% of genera & >2000 spp. Butterflies emerged ~100 million yr ago in North America and first fed on legumes. Thanks to all 87 co-authors from 28 countries! https://t.co/fY5igGzuji
