Your journalism resume is probably short anyway at this point in your career, so why not include your retail, food service, work-study or other "unrelated" job experience? It can say a lot to those who know.

If you're familiar with a newsroom, say so! But when you try to fake it based on a cursory review of the website, reviewers can tell.

Your cover letter isn't a formality — it's a test of the critical journalism skill of telling a compelling story and connecting it to a big idea. Tell a story about yourself and explain why it shows you're a great candidate for this internship.

Don't send a link to a portfolio site unless it's carefully curated. (See tip No. 1.) If it has all your stories in chronological order, reviewers won't know what represents your best work.

Give reviewers a small, curated collection of clips that show range — breaking news, investigative, a profile, a feature. Try including at least one clip that shows you can have a little fun. Show off special skills, like requesting public records, multimedia or data reporting.
