I collaborated on a podcast with Delve, the thought leadership platform of the McGill Desautels. In: Are Digital Tech Workers Coding Themselves Out of Existence? Alain Pinsonneault and I discuss our recent research. See: @DelveMcGill @DesautelsMcGill.

We find that algorithmic interactions manage, organize and supervise development work. Importantly, open source developers prefer to automate rather than augment their work. Also, often, developers augment the work of algorithms and not just the other way around. (3/4).

There is currently much interest on how algorithms affect human work, but what know little about how algorithms interact with one another and with people. This paper examines what these algorithmic interactions do in the context of open source software development. (2/4).

It relies upon the fascinating case of data scientists and identifies distinct tactics and strategies that they have developed to manage the social media polycontextuality of their work (4/4).

This polycontextuality brings opportunities for people (e.g., access to information, greater networks, jobs) but also challenges (overwhelmed much?). This paper then develops a grounded theory of how people deal with this. (3/4).

This means that the more social media people rely upon, the more contexts they participate in. These contexts are relevant to people's work. Hence the "social media polycontextuality of work." (2/4).

Excited to share this forthcoming ISR publication with Alain Pinsonneault. We argue that social media are not only technologies that enable people to do things but that they are also contexts in which people participate. #socialmedia (1/4)
