Nice reminder from my phone today that in the end, itโs all about love for each other. #lovewins

MAiD will not be appropriate for all people or all situations. It is difficult to talk about, and naturally an emotional issue. There are ethical questions which require a conscientious approach. However, I know if I was in this circumstance myself, I would want the choice. ๐งต/6

Compassion: I was consistently struck by the immense feeling of care and compassion for every person involved in his death. The professionalism, but also humanity of the professionals involved in his care. Itโs difficult to express the extent of my gratitude to these people. 5/

Peaceful end to suffering: My father was suffering, and the only end to that was death. He faced an uncertain timeline, and the only thing he had to look forward to as he waited for his life to end was more pain and suffering. Palliative options were not meeting his needs, 4/

Leaving on your own terms: my father got to chose how we spent his last day. The food he ate, the movies we watched, the conversations we had. He got to choose who surrounded him as he died, and whose hand he was holding. This was also exceptionally meaningful. 3/

5 years later, several things still stand out very strongly for me from that experience. Choice and autonomy: MAiD gave my father back a sense of autonomy in a situation where he felt he had none. This was exceptionally meaningful to him. 2/

Great interview from a Canadian physician on @rtenews today on medical assistance in dying. Iโve spoken in the past about my personal experience with MAiD as my father chose to end his fight with colon cancer with medical assistance in 2019. 1/ ๐งต

In particular, I am deeply troubled when people are choosing to die because they do not have ACCESS to treatments or supports which would alleviate their suffering in life. This is an ethical issue that Canadian lawmakers must be grappling with. 4/4
