The education grad students at McGill were on strike from in-person classes for over 10 weeks this term. We were refusing unsafe teaching & learning conditions in the presence of a disabling & deadly virus. A short recap thread of #McGillOnStrike in Winter 2022:

i want people reporting on quantum stuff, doing quantum stuff, thinking about quantum stuff to speak up more about the presence of the military in their spaces. what might we be able to do with all the anti-imperialists together??? i want to see it happen!!!

this is not unique! this society is structured to produce violence at large scales! often to do so quietly! quantum spaces are no different!

in the context of reporting, i'm questioning how the article talks about the fervent need for more quantum-trained workers without mentioning the significant numbers of well-funded military applications of the tech, and how these ed programs will benefit the imperial US military.

large, old social structures are responsible for the whole system of tech dev for the largest, most violent empire in the history of the planet. it's not just education, for sure, and it's not the fault of individual educators.

can't people choose to do what they want with their education? sure, sort of. the issue is more that military tech doesn't exist without the training that people get in academia. this has been true for a long time. **the US military *depends* on uni science and eng for this.**

quantum education programs at any level train people to work for military technology applications. in fact, those education programs make these (future) technologies possible.

on implicit militarization in quantum: we have a recent APS News article on developing a quantum workforce. it starts with uses of quantum tech, including sensors. the rest covers how hard it is to teach, new ed programs, etc. many of these sensors will be used in the military!

suuuper interesting that even quantum chemistry looks like it won't be all that useful!! https://t.co/jUC4DDAmzu regardless, we'll improve healthcare with internationalist political systems which prioritize health over profit, not with computers!!

The idea to use quantum mechanical devices to simulate other quantum systems is commonly ascribed to Feynman. Since the original suggestion, concrete proposals have appeared for simulating...

Quantum computers get a lot of hype, and @electroweak serves up the skepticism. We dive into their opinions about whether society should be investing in them at all. Read our chat here: https://t.co/2vChBvB67V

would space-based astro collapse if space agencies divested from arms manufacturers? cf. Hubble's primary contractor was Lockheed, JWST was Northrop Grumman, etc.

they don't tell you this but it is perfectly legal to go very high ratio with your mustard. 4:1 mustard to potato, easy. 3:1 very doable in small doses. 2:1 is dangerous but i've seen it
