(6/7) We uncovered a wide network of cortical areas for visuo-tactile processing and pinpointed a single one of them that holds an abstract representation of peri-personal space used to generalize learned behaviors.

(5/7) By substituting real stimuli with targeted optogenetic activation of RL sub-domains, we showed that this area alone can elicit generalization behavior.

(4/7) By selectively silencing synaptic transmission in various cortical areas, we discovered only area RL in the dorsal stream is necessary for generalizing across modalities, revealing a critical hub for bridging vision and touch.

(3/7) Using wide-field and two-photon calcium imaging, we uncovered overlapping visuo-tactile spatial maps within the dorsal cortex. Many neurons responded to both whisker and visual inputs with same spatial preferences, revealing a shared, modality-independent representation.

(2/7) We trained mice on a spatial discrimination task, first using touch in the dark, then vision in the light. Remarkably, they could instantly apply the same learned rule after switching modalities!
