I had a parent ask how I liked that "new math." Math hasn't changed. Math has always been understandable, explorable, and explainable. The problem is that math hasn't always been presented as understandable, explorable, and explainable, but mostly memorizable. #iowamath

As I sit hear and watch and hear my little 5 yearolds on seesaw explain their thinking, I can't help but feel that this narrative of learning loss might be flipped into learnings gained if only anyone would bother asking us teachers...

Today the TK math detectives did a @SteveWyborney Splat! They showed addition, subtraction, counting forwards, backwards, and revised their thinking. All sparked by just listening to their thinking. 5 year olds know so MUCH MORE than we think!
