I am writing an MG fantasy book about a Viking boy in Scandinavia: Knut Eríksson and the Gray Wolf. There will be plenty of unnecessary Norse mythology.
Alone, forgotten, a

stippled gravestone succumbs to nature's unquenchable obsession with reclamation. Without meddling human hands, it crumbles and cracks, decaying back into the dust it once was where it will, some day, provide elements for new life.

I am reading a book from a very kind, easily upset, person. It is terrible. The story, contrived. The writing, below what I would tolerate from an amateur. Oh, the writing is so, so bad. 😟 They will ask if I enjoyed it, but I cannot hurt them. I hate this.
All these depressing posts about AI are making me want to stop writing. There is no point if readers are okay with machines writing stories for them. I will continue for now, but if this grows worse, I may give up.
If a character is shouting a panicked command, do you simply use an exclamation mark, or do you write that sentence in all capital letters?
All capital letters look strange to my eyes, but using only an exclamation mark seems too subtle.
When authors ask for beta readers, are they looking for a critical eye, or praise? I would love to beta read short stories, but my matter-of-fact feedback may not be welcome.
On writing advice, seeing the word "said" repeated throughout a book claws at my brain. I start counting them instead of comprehending the story.
Is this real advice? Am I one of few people bothered by overused words?
