But if they would read Breakneck, American thinkers would have a much more accurate model of China in 2025, one we desperately need. For all the difficulties facing the PRC, we shouldn’t discount its ability to surprise us again. 11/.

But Wang details how the government can support innovation and solve public policy problems. China's vulnerabilities are real, but so are their strengths. And I fear that our policymakers continue to misjudge the Chinese. 10/.

Earlier in the book, Wang documents how unrestricted speech is not a prerequisite to innovation. For decades, we've predicted that Chinese governance will hold them back. In some cases, that was true. 9/.

In the final pages, Wang addresses the US/China competition question, arguing that China won't outcompete the U.S. because of the PRC's distrust of its own citizens and lack of pluralism. I'm not so sure. 8/.

In several chapters, Wang details the shortcomings of the engineering state, such as Zero-Covid and the one child policy. But a lawyerly state has many flaws, too. Is it better to live under a government that acts too fast or too slow? 7/.

Finally, I think the book points to an asymmetry in Chinese AI strategy that's poorly captured in the clamor around our AI race. China seems to be developing an edge in deployment and scale. 6/

Second, too many policymakers still believe that China is incapable of frontier innovation, citing tired cliches about governance and IP. But the PRC's advances in tech, as Wang documents, are strong evidence against that thesis. 5/

With this in mind, I argue that the book successfully punctures several China myths. First, we mistakenly assume that the Chinese share our mindset about unquestioned growth. They don't. 4/

This is Wang's central insight: China is an engineering state, while the U.S. is a lawyerly state. Intractable American public policy arguments can be solved like an equation in China. 3/

Ever since 1949, American failures in China policy have come from misunderstanding the PRC. As we adopt successive narratives about China, confusion is a constant. Breakneck provides the evidence to overturn many of those myths. 2/

I reviewed @danwwang's Breakneck in @compactmag_. Misunderstanding Chinese policy and capabilities brought us to this point. Without correction, America will continue to be blindsided by China. Here's my argument: 1/

I reviewed @danwwang's excellent new book for Compact. Our new consensus on China still discounts their potential for innovation. Read Breakneck, or prepare to be continually surprised by Chinese.

the future always seems radical until it's here. policymakers and technologists play different roles, but they should both be open to the idea that the future could be 10x better. cloud-seeding is just one example 🔽.

America is running dry, forcing farmers out of business. We need clever tech & policy to make water abundant again. I was skeptical of cloud seeding until the overwhelming evidence of its safety and ability to make more water convinced me to dedicate my life to it. Opinion 👇

As the list expands, the categorical benefits for minerals decrease. Rather than extending tax credits, the admin is pursuing individual deals like the DOD/MP investment. 3/.
