Actually, they did. The MLB started the practice of numbered Jerseys back in the 20's. The Browns didn't come here to Baltimore until 1954.

Location and era. I'm 39 and got to see a good portion of his career. He didn't play for the BoSox or Yankees. He played ten big league seasons and retired when Pudge hit his Apex as an all round Catcher.
He retired before I was born, so that’s my excuse—but how come nobody ever talks about Chris Hoiles? His career wasn’t super long, but he was a good catcher who could really swing it. He’s got to be one of the more underrated catchers of the last 30 years.
