Because people seem interested in this, an entire chapter of my new book is dedicated to the process of designing learning progressions and using them in the classroom:

When I got sick of being required to change the learning target and success criteria every day (because how does that make sense for kids in being able to see purpose and growth?), I started making posters of my learning progressions and putting them on my wall instead.

I got so tired of conversations about grades that were devoid of any care for learning, and a lot of that was my own fault in the classroom. This book shares my journey to find a better way to motivate students and focus on learning. Book link: https://t.co/8S1CASMcCw

How I teach is more important than what I teach. If I hurt a student by spotlighting them, their struggles, weaknesses...they will shut down. If the way I teach highlights what a student can't do or shames them for what they don't know, learning will not happen. @MisterMinor

2) Demystify education. Provide onramps for students to access content. Help them get to what really matters rather than leaving them stuck on the outside trying to find a way in. If they can't find the way in, they are liking going to stop looking.

Anyone else have a person or people you always learn something from? Someone who inspires you to be and do better? That person for me is @MisterMinor. #NSLASpring2024 A couple of gems from last night's session:

I really need people to understand that when I share a math strategy, all I'm saying is "Hey, did you know this works?" and not "This is the ONLY way to do it. This should be the FIRST strategy students learn. All other methods are inferior to this one." Lol

βWe live in a time when choosing what we read is critically important. A time when other people, who lack the imaginations to fully embrace all of our humanity, are trying to limit what our kids read. Ironically, it is through reading that we grow our humanity.β @kwamealexanderβ€οΈ
