The insights gathered will be crucial for lung deposition studies, helping us understand how pollutants interact with children’s respiratory systems and how we can design healthier indoor environments.

As part of EDIAQI, the project team has successfully installed a set of cost-effective monitoring units in households across Zagreb. These devices will operate over the next weeks to capture real-time data on children’s exposure to indoor air pollution during everyday activities.

Their efforts paid off: radon levels dropped to below 10 Bq/m³, far under the national reference level of 300 Bq/m³. Stories like Patricia’s show the true impact of raising awareness: informed citizens taking action to protect their health and improve indoor air quality.

Using free radon sensors provided by the Slovenian Radiation Protection Administration, Patricia and her husband discovered elevated radon levels. Over the next year they researched, planned, and built a DIY ventilation system, combining persistence with expert calculations.

The journalist who interviewed Dr. Žegura, Patricia Manfreda, later decided to test her own home for radon—after hearing the comment that “we may unknowingly be exposed.”
