"It's bittersweet because of what's happened, but to see her joy on the court like sticking her tongue out, flexing, it was everything."
Amid her remarkable comeback season, Paige Bueckers' family saw a familiar spark return on UConn's Big East title run:
There has never been an active openly gay MLB player, but there’s a whole lot of openly religious players.
People from “all walks of life” clearly don’t feel welcomed in baseball, and this whole saga makes it pretty obvious why no one has felt safe enough to come out.
It is insanely hard to get questions in during these huge press conferences, which makes it SO frustrating to see time wasted on outlets that do not cover women’s sports inventing controversy for their own benefit.
Staley handled this perfectly, but she shouldn’t have had to.
Dawn Staley says trans women should be allowed to play women’s sports. Says she knows she’s going to get heat now before the biggest game, and she’s okay with that.
(I believe it was Outkick that asked the question.)
What an incredible statement of inclusivity from Dawn. Wow.
Cool moment behind-the-scenes between Paige Bueckers and one of the wheelchair basketball players here, I believe they’re playing an exhibition during Texas-NC State.
He tracked her down to take a photo and congratulate her on yesterday’s game!
"We've been called so many things and I'm sick of it. I'm sick of it because I coach some of the best human beings that the game has ever had."
Dawn Staley called out UConn coach Geno Auriemma's comments on South Carolina's play after Sunday's 81-77 win:
Just had to celebrate the 23rd birthday on Sunday of a dear friend who died in 2021 after complications from COVID.
I don’t care who you are. Talking about a disease that killed millions of people like this is unacceptable and cruel.
There it is: Sarah Strong, the No. 1 prospect in the Class of 2024, announces her commitment to UConn women's basketball.
She's the Huskies' third No. 1 commit in the last five years, joining Paige Bueckers (2020) and Azzi Fudd (2021).
The extra infuriating thing about this is the asker is not some random with a blog. Indy Star does Pulitzer-winning sports journalism, and still.
If outlets aren’t sending diverse reporters with experience/expertise in women’s sports, they’re not equipped to cover the WNBA.

Caitlin: "Yeah, I do that at my family after every game.”
Reporter: "Start doing it to me and we'll get along just fine."

Laeticia Amihere could have started anywhere else. Instead, she became the first bench player selected in the first round of the

since Azura Stevens in 2018.
How trust in Dawn Staley led the South Carolina seniors to yet another historic night:
BREAKING: Aliyah Boston will have Gamecock garnet braids for the NCAA Tournament.
Says there’s a specific reason (beyond it being the team color) that she got them, but she won’t reveal it until the tournament is over 👀
Dawn Staley with a lot of high praise for Paige Bueckers:
"Paige was good when she was injured ... I love Paige's game. For me, I would like for her to take more shots if I'm Geno, because she doesn't take bad shots ... Paige is going to be an Olympian at some point soon."
Geno Auriemma says Paige Bueckers never confirmed her return with him, but hearing her previously talk about her love for UConn, he wasn't shocked.
"Paige is very, very bad at making decisions. When we were recruiting her I had to threaten her because she couldn't decide."
Just watched the replay of that call on Aaliyah Edwards at the end. One of the worst game-ending officiating decisions I’ve ever seen. To let a game that good finish like that is criminal.
My understanding of the Tua Tagovailoa situation: He tweaked his back in the 1st quarter on a sneak and didn’t miss time. After the Matt Milano hit, his back locked up — leading to him wobbling. Into the locker room for a full concussion check. Fully cleared. Now on the field.
Geno Auriemma has a lot of complaints postgame about the officiating and fouls not being called.
The teams were called for a combined 44 fouls — 21 for South Carolina and 23 for UConn. That is the most fouls that have been called against the Gamecocks the entire season, so...?
A'ja Wilson advocating quite convincingly for a WNBA expansion team in Charlotte on her pre-All-Star game press conference.
"I miss Bojangles a little bit."
18,000 is the largest crowd I've ever seen in person for a women's sport. That was genuinely one of the coolest experiences of my entire life, and I am very grateful today that I get to do this.
Felt like a little kid all day and still do.
At SEC spring meetings, Dawn Staley wanted answers about why the NCAA Tournament schedule disadvantaged South Carolina and Virginia Tech with a day less rest than Iowa and LSU.
Explaining Staley's concerns and why she wanted closure before next season:
Overheard a little girl on the concourse during halftime:
“Mom, she has a Bueckers jersey. I want a Bueckers jersey for my birthday.”
Mom: “Are you glad we came?”
“This is the best night of my life.”

Nikki McCray was on Dawn Staley’s original coaching staff at South Carolina from 2008-2017, helping lead the Gamecocks to their first national title in her last season. One of the all-time greats.
South Carolina women's basketball has its first transfer commit of 2023: Oregon guard Te-Hina Paopao.
Paopao ranked No. 14 in the country in 3-point percentage last season and was the Ducks' leading scorer during their WNIT run:
Geno Auriemma dropping some great lines on his Big East POY this afternoon:
“I don’t need to spend time with my grandkids, I have Paige. That’s the same thing as a 13-year-old.”
“She’s full of it and she’s delusional, but there’s always a nugget of truth to what she says.”
Oh these boys are trying to make me cry. DK Joyner and Josh Vann in here, and DK says to Vann, "We're gonna tell our daughters about this one day. Girl dads."
They fistbump on it.
Camden star Joyce Edwards, the No. 2 recruit in the class of 2024, has committed to South Carolina women's basketball and Dawn Staley over LSU and Clemson.
Staley has now signed every top 35 recruit from in-state since 2014:
Zia Cooke concludes her WNBA debut for the Los Angeles Sparks with a phenomenal stat line:
14 points, 2 rebounds, 2 assists in 14 minutes; made 5-6 FG, 2-2 3PT

4/5 Freshies (only sans Laeticia Amihere who is with Team Canada) and A’ja Wilson in the house for the Gamecocks’ season opener!
Freshies are getting their rings from last season, Wilson here supporting former teammate Tiffany Mitchell for her jersey retirement.
Cool news this morning: South Carolina women's basketball will play its 2023-24 season opener against Notre Dame in Paris.
It will be the first NCAA regular-season basketball game played in Paris & the

Aliyah Boston speaking with media ahead of the Fever's rematch with the Aces tonight & drops a bar in response to being asked if her early WNBA success surprised her:
"I don't want to sound like I'm being cocky, but I expect greatness ... I just leave it up to the man upstairs."
Glad you asked!
Clemson spent 62 cents on WBB for every dollar spent on MBB. UNC is the only (public) ACC school that spent more on women.
South Carolina is one of 17 schools that spent more on WBB, 92 cents on MBB for every dollar on the women. Only school in the SEC doing so.
Joyce Edwards planned to wait until April to commit, but South Carolina sold her at Sunday's Maryland game.
From a chat with A'ja Wilson to Dawn Staley's relentless effort making

academically viable, why Edwards was ready to make it official:

How Dawn Staley built a pipeline from Columbia to pro success:
Per Dawn Staley, Kamilla Cardoso and Raven Johnson didn't start because they broke a team rule. Said it's not a long term thing at all and they took it on the chin. Both played significant time after sitting for the first few minutes.
They won conference championships on the same day. Both of their teams drew 1-seeds. Now, they have a legit chance to face each other for the NCAA championship.

Cool tidbit from Dawn Staley about her history with playing MEAC teams.
Remembers top teams wouldn't schedule Temple when she started coaching except for Vivian Stringer's Rutgers and Pat Summitt's Tennessee. She tries to pay it back by giving developing programs opportunities
NaLyssa Smith gave a nice quote about Boston yesterday that’s reflected by these numbers:
“A lot of people don’t adjust to the league this quick, but she’s having consistent games back-to-back-to-back. It really just shows she’s put in the work.”
Aliyah Boston is already making HERstory. 🙌
she's the first player to start their WNBA career with 3 consecutive games of 10+ PTS and 60% or better from the field.
The AP began giving awards for women’s basketball in 1995.
There have been 7 undefeated seasons since then. Either the team’s star or coach won the respective AP award each of those years.
If it wins the championship, South Carolina will be the first team ever to have neither.
"I was like 'Who?! South Carolina?!' Like don't play with me."
Te-Hina Paopao entered the transfer portal expecting to stay in the Pac-12. She never imagined Dawn Staley would call.
Why Paopao chose South Carolina and how she fits with the

Aliyah Boston, Tiffany Mitchell taking part in the post-practice circle!
Boston is back in Columbia to receive her rings from last season on Saturday, Mitchell for her jersey retirement Sunday.
Not 100% sure so will hopefully get confirmation postgame, but I believe Dawn Staley is wearing a Cheyney University jersey today.
Cheyney, which is ~30 miles outside Philadelphia, is the nation’s oldest HBCU. Their WBB coach Alishia Mosley is from North Carolina.
South Carolina women's basketball landed its second transfer commitment of 2023 from JUCO star Sakima Walker.
Walker, a 6-5 center, was the NJCAA Player of the Year in her lone season at Northwest Florida after she transferred from Rutgers in 2022:
Did some digging after Dawn said this…
Of 9 undefeated seasons in NCAAW history, the team’s star won Naismith NPOY 8 times. Exception was Texas in ‘86 when Cheryl Miller (USC) won it.
If South Carolina wins the title, a non-Aliyah Boston NPOY would break a near 40-year trend.
Dawn Staley speaks to media about her team's undefeated season but says her team needs to be covered like other past undefeated teams.
@TheNextHoops
"Is my player Aliyah Boston the one being talked about on men's games? No, she's not... And it wasn't her last year."
Despite the 200+ miles between Columbia and Gateway Center Arena, the atmosphere at the Atlanta Dream's home opener felt more like a South Carolina crowd at CLA.
On a triumphant 'homecoming' for Aliyah Boston and her first WNBA win with the Indiana Fever:
Don't want to elevate the original tweet, but the way racism is directed at the South Carolina program specifically by fans of other elite programs is...not surprising but really disappointing to see so often.
Takes a lot of the fun out of rivalries when it sinks to this level.
I think this is correct, and it makes what South Carolina did yesterday that much more impressive to me.
Less experienced than LSU with zero returning starters. Olivia Miles or not, hanging 100 on a team as talented as Notre Dame out of the gate is wild.
I don’t think anyone should be too surprised by LSU tonight: they’re playing like a team with three new starters.
Up against a helluva Colorado team they made plenty of errors — there’s a lot to work on… because it’s still November! That’s how it goes.
South Carolina women's basketball has officially hired former Duke assistant coach Winston Gandy to replace Fred Chmiel.
Gandy comes to the

after 3 seasons at Duke. In 2022, he helped the Blue Devils to their first NCAA Tournament since 2018:
The last domino falls: South Carolina leading scorer Zia Cooke has declared for 2023 WNBA Draft, joining three other members of 'The Freshies.'
Cooke had a career season in 2022-23, earning her first All-America honors and the Ann Meyers Drysdale Award:
South Carolina fans might be watching some more Big Ten this season — Aliyah Boston will be a studio analyst for women’s basketball games with Meghan McKeown.
Super cool opportunity for Boston, who was a communications major in college, and a huge W for fans to get her insights.

Considering how queer the WNBA is, it’s an interesting perspective from Horston that the college game still hasn’t gotten there in supporting LGBTQ athletes.
The deep history of homophobia in women’s college hoops, especially with recruiting, clearly still holds weight in 2023.

South Carolina women's basketball landed its second 2024 commitment Friday from 6-5 center Adhel Tac, the No. 33 prospect in the country.
Tac joins No. 11 prospect Madisen McDaniel in the
#Gamecocks
class with several big targets still on the board:
Honored does not begin to cover it.
Utterly humbled to join so many writers I look up to in the legacy of this award, and incredibly grateful to play a small part in this moment for women’s hoops.
Thank you so much

Tiff Mitchell last week on Raven Johnson: “She embodies how I felt in college being faster, athletic, running the team … I said look, if you’re gonna wear 25, you have to wear it with some pride & know who was wearing it before you.”
She’s already living up to a big legacy ⬇️
South Carolina star Aliyah Boston is the projected No. 1 pick in the 2023 WNBA Draft…but she has another year of eligibility if she wants to use it.
How NIL changed the game for athletes with pro aspirations, and why a return could make sense for Boston:
Geno Auriemma said he didn't know what Paige Bueckers was going to decide regarding her return
"Paige is very very bad at making decisions. When we were recruiting her, I Had to threaten her because she couldn't make a decision" 😂
The WNBA’s Washington Mystics, Phoenix Mercury, LA Sparks and Atlanta Dream all expected to have scouts at today’s UConn-South Carolina game.
Might be just a few future pros between these two rosters!
Okay folks, it’s big personal news time: I’m moving to Knoxville, TN to cover high school sports full-time for

Syracuse coach Felisha Legette-Jack has nothing but good things to say about Paige Bueckers, says they share a love of gospel music — Legette-Jack saw the UConn star share her favorite song to her Instagram.
"That's what makes me mad at Paige, because it makes me like her more."
"If I named all the legends that ever played for me, Paige probably wouldn't make that team. I tell her that all the time." — Geno Auriemma jokes that he digs at Bueckers so often bc she loves proving people wrong.
"Very few have impacted UConn basketball the way Paige has."
South Carolina women's basketball has its first commitment in the Class of 2024: Madisen McDaniel, the No. 11 prospect in the class.
Dawn Staley has now landed a top-15 point guard for the
#Gamecocks
in three of her last four recruiting classes:
INBOX: Former South Carolina standout Zia Cooke will play for Team USA at the 2023 3x3 U23 World Cup beginning Sept. 27 in Poland.
The team includes 2017 3x3 U18 World Cup gold medalist Aquira DeCosta, Charlotte G Dazia Lawrence and Syracuse G Dyaisha Fair.
