We need to scan more placentas to evaluate this further but we are really excited about these results! We hope to use this technique earlier in pregnancy to get a preview of placental health so that doctors can determine risk of complications and need for intervention.

We then further broke down participants by placental pathology findings into vascular, immune and none. Here we saw that vascular pathologies had low vascularization compared to no pathology, whereas immune pathologies (my fav VUE) demonstrated higher vascularization.

Makes sense as placentas that can’t established good blood flow also can’t acquire nutrients to grow a fetus effectively.

We HUMI scanned placentas from pregnant patients with and without a diagnosis of fetal growth restriction (FGR). First thing we found was the FGR placentas had significantly less vessel density than normally grown fetuses at the same gestational age.

We tested high sensitivity ultrasound microvessel imaging (HUMI) of the third trimester placenta to see if it could give us any indications of placenta (therefore fetal) health. This technique has been used in other diseases like cancer

Fetal growth restriction has many different causes but all lead to increased risks of poor outcomes for the baby. Pathologic review of the placenta is helpful for understanding cause, but we can’t do anything to improve pregnancy outcomes once the baby is delivered.

Can you use ultrasound to identify changes in placental villi that correspond with pathology at delivery? This is the question we sought to address in our newest manuscript. A 🧵 to summarize our findings
