Obviously adding his talents as one of the best players of all time is a major contributor to those chances. But citing the number of teams he has taken to the Finals (while ignoring his Finals record btw) as evidence of his greatness as a player is silly.

He has now built himself a contender without having to go through the early growth phase or the later decline phase of a successful contender. He jumps from team to team, timing his stints to coincide with the peak of a team’s chances of contending.

He finds a team with recent lottery luck, young talent, plenty of draft assets, and future cap space and signs with them. He then wields his significant organizational influence to force a trade of those young assets for a win-now star and veterans, accelerating this lifecycle.

When a superstar like Lebron James, who’s only goal is winning RINGZZ (which is the fault of reductive greatness arguments by the NBA media), this is the point in the lifecycle that he finds a new franchise that suits his needs (really trying to avoid the parasite analogy here).

no cap space to sign new talent, and limited trade assets. Their stars either age out of the ability to carry a team or have significant interpersonal friction due to power dynamics in a franchise. This is the end of the typical lifecycle of a contender (w/ notable exceptions).

The draft picks that are retained are at the end of the first round and rarely able to provide young talent with the potential to contribute on a contender. As a result, after a few years of success, teams find themselves with overinflated contracts,

the teams are capped out (able to re-sign their own free agents but unable to sign free agents from other teams due to salary cap rules). Assets such as promising young players and draft picks are traded away for win-now veterans.

Not saying anything groundbreaking here, but successful teams have a lifecycle. As young stars achieve success, they are rewarded with max contracts and more influence over a franchise. Role players on successful teams are re-signed for above market contracts because...
