Now, as a therapist, so much of how I have held space this week is informed by those years and the stories I carry with me from that role. These are the humans who are on my mind. So, I hope those celebrating a rapist being in office have the day they deserve.

Months earlier I had shown up to her home, with my dog, after the offender was released on bail. We got 30 mins notice, so I had bolted to my car in my pajamas, scared he would go to her home and kill her.

… When she won her case, a rarity in our work, I made her a mug with the phrase ā€œtipsy ā€˜n frisky with a vengeance for justiceā€ on it, as our new inside ā€œjokeā€¦ā€.

12. I’m thinking about the defense attorney who asked my client on the stand if she ā€œoften got frisky when (she) would get tipsy,ā€ insinuating that the life altering assault was a result of being a frisky-tipsy woman. He also asked her if she just had a ā€œvengeance for justiceā€ ….

…I sat there, stunned. I failed her, I should have known the system would fail her. How harmful and naive to give false hope. I sat in my car and cried, praying I would get into a grad school soon and be able to leave the job that was crushing my soul after nearly 4 long years.

…I will never forget, 30 minutes later, her having a panic attack and running out of the DA’s office after ā€œproblems with her caseā€ were flippantly listed off as reasons that they chose not pursue it.

… As we sat in my office before the big meeting, I told her, ā€œHere is the evidence they have, which is more than we normally have, so they will probably schedule the grand jury to indict this guy when we meet.ā€.

11. I’m thinking, as I often do, about the young woman who had such a clear cut case, that even the jaded investigator thought we could get it prosecuted. DNA evidence, a witness, previous charges… I really thought we had him.

A judge’s orders are only as good as the cops serving them, who are too often offenders themselves, and it is just a piece of paper anyway. Abusers walked through full-stay-away orders all the time. Reporting violations is rarely successful.

10. The friend I helped fill out the order of protection and firearm surrender at the dog park after her ex husband escalated post separation. Separation is the most dangerous time. I was not surprised when the cops buddy-budied with him and took his side.

9. The investigator who joked about playing ā€œice ice babyā€ as he pulled up to interview a suspect at a farm known for hiring immigrants. How I was told not to say anything, not to ā€œlose our valuable relationship with himā€ that was helpful occasionally (?) to our clients.

7. Thinking about the superintendent of a large school district who called my supervisor to complain after I called him out for violating my client’s Title IX rights. How smug he looked when he proceeded to make meeting with my clients @ school nearly impossible.

Y’all talk about exemptions for ā€œrape and incest,ā€ but never domestic violence as a part of your list. Your list of reasons a woman should get bodily autonomy only after having it violently taken from her.
