Today, as Shadow Health Minister, I was pleased to speak in support of the Rare Cancers Bill which allows research to be targeted at some of the rarest cancers, such as brain or pancreatic cancers, so that no one gets left behind. 1/3

I hope the strikes are resolved. 🤞. But as @wesstreeting said ironically in Feb 2023 to the then Health Secretary:. “The power to stop these strikes is in the Government’s hands.”. 15/16.

Yet the BMA got 90% of those who did vote to agree. 🗳️. So his, and his party’s actions and policies, have literally made it easier to strike in the future. 14/16

This is the very thing @wesstreeting used as a reason the strike isn’t justified. He said on the floor of the House:. "Despite failing to get a majority of their members to vote for strike action. they are still proposing a five-day strike.". 13/16.

Secondly, the legislation makes it easier to strike!. It repeals the thresholds set for lawful strike action. Again, pointed out here in their own FAQ 👇. 12/16

As the Government’s own Explanatory Notes point out. 📄. 11/16

Firstly, it removes the Secretary of State’s ability to set minimum service levels in critical sectors like health. So now there's no legal way to set safe staffing levels during strikes. 🚑. 10/16.

This legislation repeals the Minimum Service Levels legislation of 2023. Why does that matter? 🤔. Well. 9/16.

But scratch a little deeper, and we see a looming problem. ⚠️. That is the Employment Rights Bill being pushed through by the Labour Government. 8/16.

"It would send a message that the Government were weak, and we warned that the unions would simply come back for more. Unfortunately, events in recent days have shown that we were right.". He, too, is, of course, right again. ✅. 7/16.

As the Shadow Secretary of State pointed out 💥:. "We warned the Government that caving in to union demands for above-inflation pay rises without any conditions. would set a dangerous precedent.". He is also right. ✅️. 6/16.

He then went on to say:. "They can judge me not just by my words, but by my actions.". Here’s an interesting point. 👀. 5/16.

He also stated:. "We will not be reopening this year’s pay award because we simply cannot afford to, and it would not be fair on others in the NHS workforce, regardless.". He is right. ✅. 4/16.

He said:. "Following a 28.9% pay rise thanks to the actions of this Government, the BMA’s threatened industrial action is entirely unreasonable.". He is right. ✅. 3/16.

He closed his statement by saying:. "The entire House, on both sides of the Chamber, has spoken with one voice. There has been total unanimity. that the proposed strikes are unreasonable, unnecessary and unfair.". He is right. ✅. 2/16.
