Really love that in this industry you can work on the Game of the Year and still get laid off 🙃
'There's almost nobody left': CEO of Baldur's Gate 3 dev Swen Vincke says the D&D team he initially worked with is gone, due to Hasbro layoffs
FYI if you are wondering why the acceptance speeches at
#TheGameAwards
are so short and high level, the nominees were told they only had 30 seconds for an acceptance speech, after which the music would play them off to be “respectful to our time allotment and fellow acceptors”
Re: the situation at Ubisoft Montreal, this is not the time for your shitty game jokes or hot takes about games. I can't believe I have to fucking say this.
I'm excited for
#SpiderManMilesMorales
but even more so in this scene, because it means that the
@insomniacgames
devs thought it important enough to take the time/budget to include a Deaf character in the story, and capture and animate ASL accurately.

So in a few years when there’s a massive gap in the industry from all the games that were never made by the people who got laid off at the studios that were shuttered, who’s going to make your games? Where’s “shareholder value” going to come from when you’ve cut to the bone?
Solidarity with the Riot Games employees who are walking out today to protest harassment and forced arbitration. ✊🏽
If you like video games, support the people who make them, so they can keep doing that in a way that is healthy and sustainable.
It’s that simple, really.
Men in games: If you are surprised right now, because gender-underrepresented colleagues did not approach you about harassment it is because you are not deemed safe to talk to. It means you have not done enough to actively hear them or protect them in the past. Sit with that.
Without game developers, you don’t have games, so maybe fucking treat the people that create the media that you love with some level of decency and respect because we’re just humans trying to do a goddamn job.
The best thing young people can do early in their careers is work on setting appropriate boundaries between their work and life to prevent exploitation and burnout
Story time 🧵
#WhatAGameDevLooksLike
was born out of an incident I encountered at
#GDC
19 when I was stopped THREE separate times at badge collection because apparently I didn't look like a person who would speak at the Game Developers Conference.
So this super awks thing happened to me yesterday at
@Official_GDC
registration. As I approached the line for speaker badge pickup, a security guard stopped me and asked where I was going. I pointed to the speaker registration booth ahead. He said, “that’s for speakers”.

Getting real fucking tired of waking to find out more friends and colleagues have been laid off by giant multi million dollar corporations in this multi billion dollar industry, like who the fuck do you think is going to be make your games and how do you think that’s sustainable
A big yikes for me is when people contact game devs on their personal social media or email accounts and feel entitled to information that we can’t release. Don’t be toxic like this guy.
If you are a member of an overrepresented group in the games industry saying that politics should be kept out of games, what you're really saying is that you want it to be the status quo where the current norms and institutional biases go unchallenged
News just broke that current Blizzard President J. Allen Brack is leaving Blizzard Entertainment. Jen Oneal and Mike Ybarra will take over as "co-leaders of Blizzard".

Helldivers fans -- we’ve heard your feedback on the Helldivers 2 account linking update. The May 6 update, which would have required Steam and PlayStation Network account linking for new players and for current players beginning May 30, will not be moving forward.
We’re still…
Sorry but I'm not spending any tears on CEOs who make fucked up decisions and literally don't even mention the people whose lives they have upended in this essay of self-serving, non-accountability, performative bullshit 💅🏽
I see a lot of shots at Phil over today's Xbox announcements. I get it. But knowing him as a human, I know this hurts him as much as anyone else. I can't speak for all of the leadership there, but I do know him and I do know what he is likely going through.
I'm not trying to…
@JesNx
@TrulyTafakari
What you did had a lasting impact not just on the women at Riot but also on the entire industry to make sure people are accountable for their actions. I’m sorry you had to go through this. Thank you for leading the way.

Men be better challenge
Seriously is it so much to ask you to:
-not be a predator at professional events
-listen and not interrupt your gender marginalized peers when they talk
-fucking introspect on your privilege
-hold each other accountable and call out bad behavior
Wow! Elmo is glad he asked! Elmo learned that it is important to ask a friend how they are doing. Elmo will check in again soon, friends! Elmo loves you.❤️

Now, I’m a short woman of color with pink hair. I probably dress young for my age. But despite that, I can’t help by think: Do I not look like a game developer, let alone one that would speak at a professional conference?
Happy

#WhatAGameDevLooksLike
In 2019, I was in the line to pick up my badge at the Game Developers Conference when I was stopped on THREE separate occasions by security to tell me I was in the wrong line.
The thing is, I wasn’t. (1/9) 🧵
Hey, so it’s come to my attention that
@DantePowell
already said this before I did; I wasn’t aware of this earlier. In fact, others have been saying this on here since 2016. While I think the point still stands, go like his tweet instead.
When I was working at Xbox, before the new OS came out, the tooltip to teach users what they could do on their friends list included the phrase "socialize with your friends!".
It got translated to be "SUPPORT SOCIALISM WITH YOUR FRIENDS!!" in Polish.
It looks like the German translator of the Grandia HD Collection wasn't given enough context… When you miss an attack in battle, it says "FRÄULEIN!" – that's "miss" as in "lady", not as in "didn't hit". *Swings weapon* "UNMARRIED WOMAN!"
The idea of a "gamer card", whether intended to be humorous or not, is some gatekeeping bullshit and contributes to a culture where people don't feel like they belong in gaming spaces.
Hey men in game dev--esp white men in positions of power--instead of tweeting platitudes about your shock/horror and how "we must do better", how about you sit down, stop taking up space, and use your privilege to ACTUALLY and INTENTIONALLY address this fuckery in your studios ✨
Since Bungie made the claim that they can't afford to focus resources on making PvP/Gambit maps for D2, I'm going to step you through a mathematical breakdown of how disingenuous and penny-pinching Bungie is being here.
A thread: (1/8)
I didn’t see any security asking the white men in the line if they were speakers. I asked the guard if he also asked the guy in the line behind me if he was a speaker. He vaguely announced that it was the speaker line. Yes, I know I’m in the speaker line. Because I’m a speaker.
Love waking up to hear that there’s been yet another massive layoff in this industry while companies report record profits and games are some of the best they’ve ever been but the price point hasn’t changed for decades; real great job security here folks, make it make sense 😔🫠
Remarkable moment. Justin Torres wins fiction prize for his landmark novel Blackouts and is joined on stage by a collective of authors who share a joint statement on behalf of Palestinians in Gaza & West Bank demanding a ceasefire.
I started
#WhatAGameDevLooksLike
as a way to reinforce (mostly to myself at first) the fact that the games industry is a place where anyone, from any background, can belong feel included. If you consider yourself a game developer, YOU BELONG HERE.
So if you’re at

and feel comfortable doing so, take a picture of yourself and share it with the hashtag below. The face of the industry is changing, so let’s make sure that people both within and and outside of games see that.

While there's discourse around layoffs regardless of if the game you ship is good, wins awards, remember that people who make "bad" games that aren't critically acclaimed are still people with lives. To talk about who "deserves" to be laid off plays into a capitalist narrative ✨
I said, “yes, I know.” I proceeded to get in the line. A few seconds later, a different security person came up to me and asked if I was a speaker. I said yes. She walked away. Then a third did, when I got to the top of the line.
When one of your white friends discovers a cuisine that isn’t from your country of origin but somehow you are now responsible for representing all of Asia:
#SorryWrongAsian
It turned out that multiple other women, PoC, and non-American/English as first language speakers also faced similar issues getting their badges.
Additional fun fact: I was at
#GDC
to do a talk on the importance of inclusive culture in game studios and the industry 🙃
Just thinking about how many POC/LGBTQIA* indie projects could be funded with $100 million dollars instead of it going towards this nonsensical fuckery
Serious question: do we actually lose anything of value when we treat people in
#gamedev
more kindly and empathetically, with the dignity and humanity that we all deserve? What is harmed in the industry if we're okay with it being softer and more compassionate?
Just sitting here thinking about the collective loss of the years and years of new ideas, mechanics, characters, universes, etc. that will never see the light of day due to callous business decisions wiping them out in an instant
The hardest part is working on this thing for so long and not getting to share it with y'all. I took the first interview for this project 1004 days ago. A thousand days of thinking about our core challenges, crafting a world, helping others fill it with new, cool things. Gone.
Hello! I’m JC and I’m a producer at Harebrained Schemes. I’ve been in the industry about six years and have worked in localization, DEI, and QA before moving into production.

I've been on multiple GDC "diversity" panels where I have been the only nonwhite person, and while everyone else is talking about pride parades and free tampons in bathrooms I'm expected to carry all the conversations about race and intersectionality and wheww that's tiring shit
The second the gaming industry decided "diversity" is anyone who isn't a straight white man and stretched it to include white women and subsets of white people. It set true diversity and inclusion in gaming back decades for ALL brown people.
Lmao so
#TheGameAwards
is happening in a few hours and so far the only presenters we are aware of are four men and a muppet, who else is getting Summer Games Fest vibes 🫠
So here's the deal: next week, during

You gotta say though, a game dev conference getting postponed and getting its date pushed out to another time when it’s still not clear whether they will be able to deliver is pretty on brand for game dev 🤷🏻♀️ 😐
#GDC2020
I guess this is the part where I say “oh wow this blew up”. I have nothing to sell or promote in the light of a viral tweet so just be good to each other.
If you are a piece of shit and are considering harassing actual human beings for just trying to make video games, perhaps the legal precedent of being sued by the studio for half a million dollars will make you think twice. This is a huge win for devs in the industry.
Good afternoon! I'm taking a moment to highlight a win we got yesterday on behalf of
@Bungie
, who sprang into action to ensure the safety of an employee who was targeted for racist harassment and threats last year.
Just woke up and I’m going through the

hashtag before starting Day 2 of

and oh my god does seeing so much diversity in our industry make my heart happy 💜
I don’t know how many other women in

do this, but I have an email folder called “Nice Things” which contains positive feedback I’ve received on my work, so that when I feel unsupported or that my work is not valuable or that I’m an impostor I have reminders that I’m okay

Hey gamedevs nominated at the IGF Awards and the Game Developers Choice Awardsat
#GDC2024
: you have the chance to do something very cool next week in your acceptance speeches 👇🏽
The part of the Bungo story that jumped out the most to me was this stark + infuriating fact that the people who were harmed will not get justice. For an industry that prides itself on creative problem solving, how do we find a solution that is just, restorative, and sustainable?
When we say "Representation Matters" we don't just mean that representation matters in the end product. Representation Matters on the team and in the creative process, from concept to execution and delivery. It's not that hard.
The Biggest take on Forspoken and writing is that there were NO BLACK WRITERS HIRED.
Hire Black people to write your video games. Black Game writers exist. For instance. Me. Right here.
Not after you fucked up. Hire Black Game Designers at the beginning so we can avoid this.
@BlackGirlNerds

: Trini from the Power Rangers. There weren't/aren't many Asian women on TV, and she kicked ass. Plus she got me into vests.
Hey gamedevs, if you or your game are nominated for

Twitter friends, we've had some discussion about what some red flags are for interviews/applications, but what are some 💚GREEN FLAGS 💚 that would make you more interested/excited about working at a company?
Are we far enough out from GDC that we can now have our annual discourse about how expensive it is to be in San Francisco and how the conference should be not in the US
Children of color are going to learn about race whether you teach them or not. And most of them will learn before they get to a classroom setting.
If this article headline means teaching WHITE kids about race, it should just say that.
